So im planning on pasteurizing coir without the bucket tek this time in an autoclave bag with a digital thermometer. I understand that im trying to reach around 140-160 degrees for an hour and a half.
Im following this tek http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17246844/fpart/1
the confusion starts right here
Quote: "It is important to know how many degrees the core temperature of your substrate will climb before the heat needs to be turned off on the stove."
What does this mean exactly? What exactly am i supposed to be doing cause after this line I am getting lost.

if someone could explain the basic idea that would be great. from what im reading it sounds like a guessing game.
How i want to interpret it goes along the lines of when it reaches 140f then set timer for an hour or so. He makes it sound like you turn the stove off way before this. I was planning on doing this in my 23 qt pc with the heat element on the entire time (should i have the lid on or off?). I cant imagine the temperature being too hard to control this way... any tips/tricks/common knowledge i dont know about please share!

That means you don't want to turn the stove off when the core temp hardly rises and stays at 100 degrees. Or if you leave the stove on too long and the core surpasses 160 degrees. So if your water is at 180 degrees you want to make sure you turn the stove off at the appropriate time while the core substrate temp is still below 140, that way the water temp will slowly cool as the core temp of the sub slowly rises into the 140-160 range. That's the main important part! Just keep an eye on the temp until it hits the appropriate range set your timer and walk away. If your a little scared about too much heat don't let the water to past 170 degrees, just be prepared to sit there for a while, checking on the core temp... That's what I did my first few times.

And use a lid, that way it distributes the temperature evenly throughout the substrate! since you are using a pressure cooker do not tighten the lid!
