Who here has ever been in a fraternity?!

I'm applied for Delta Sigma Pi at my campus. They're a professional fraternity that is supposedly good for networking and making connections and whatnot.
Anyway, there's a pledging process involved before you are officially welcomed into the organization. I've asked people in the group what exactly this process consists of and they won't give me specific details. I'm new to uni life so the fact that this info is kept secret surprised me a bit.
Anyone ever been through this? What's the pledging, initiation shit all about? Are frats a good thing to look into if you wanna make the most of college and get a leg up in the business world??

seems to me like more trouble than its worth, but it appears that some people really enjoy being in a frat. it might be fun and beneficial, especially if you are in a more open-minded one.

I knew some alpha sigma Phi's. They were a football frat. They were chill. They were somepartiers. They had their infamous "hell week". Which consisted of hazing like eating whole soft sticks of butter and wearing your jock strap over your mouth like a gas mask. When a brother took it off you you had to hold your breathe. Until it was put back on. Ey ran around their frat getting things thrown on them, getting pissed on.
I decided to say no. I saw a few people get hazed and they loved it when they were in. They hazed others worse because of it. It was getting worse as i saw it. But it's been a few years. Almost 30 now.
A professional frat might be different from a football frat. Idk.

The dick tied to a rope with wax is real. Just sayin. Way before the movie old school, my dad told me about him doing it off of the frat house for hell week.

people want to piss on others who are trying to network a worthy causality between people who'll help them get further ahead in useless, dead end, hapless careers?

I'll keep the thread updated whenever something interesting happens with all of this. My interview is supposed to be on weds, if I'm in, there's a 6 week pledge period that will follow.

Of course, these people do there own thing when no ones watching but I'm not gonna be a little bitch just to put some greek letters to my name.

I was a Sigma Chi. Graduated 5 years ago and my frat brothers are almost exclusively the people I keep in contact with. I had a fucking blast in it and it really helped me refine my social skills. The "professional" fraternities have a tendency to keep to themselves so if you're looking to interact with a lot of other sororities, I would consider something else.

I enjoyed it. The pledging process was kinda shitty but also pretty fun. I didn't get pissed on or anything gross or that made me uncomfortable, mostly just drinking 40s and doing ridiculous stuff, which seemed really dumb at the time but looking back its pretty funny. The quote that people throw around a lot is its "the most fun you'll never want to have again"...a lot of the hazing was just making you work out, like bows and toes and stuff.
I never thought I would join a fraternity but I went to a party my freshman year during rush for the free alcohol and found out it was actually a pretty cool group of guys that were into the same music and drugs as I was.
Some of my best friends are from my fraternity, it's not for everyone and there are those "douche-bag bro-ski" type frats out there, but most fraternities aren't like that at all
Plus you do one semester of doing the bitch work then you have 7+ of fun parties, sober drivers at your disposal, and you can make some really good friends too.
I'm in my senior year now and the younger kids who are running it now are fucking retarded so I'm not too involved, but I'm definitely glad I did it
EDIT: I didn't see that it was a professional fraternity. Usually those don't haze at all and you just do a meeting once a month or whatever. Might be different at your school though

If it's a professional fraternity I wouldn't worry about it. The hazing won't be anything too bad.

The question begs to be asked. Do I need to pay for friends? Or do I want to be around the type of people that need to pay for friends?

The question begs to be answered (btw that's not what that fucking phrase means at all). If you're joining a fraternity for the sake of having friends, then sure, you need to pay for friends. And you'll probably get along with others that are paying for their friends. It's kind of like people with similar interests and desires get along with each other or something. If you're joining a fraternity for other reasons you'll probably find a frat and some friends that aren't doing it to "pay for friends". Joining a fraternity is pretty similar to joining other social clubs. You do it because the people in the club are like you and you'll get along with them, their interests, their personalities, and whatever else. I won't deny that there are plenty of douchebag frats (I live across from Teke my freshman year after all), but there are plenty of awesome ones as well.
