    #18803434 - 09/05/13 01:54 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Hi, is this  Reishi? I'm going to make a tea with it but I want to make sure it is Reishi first... thanks...

 Looks very atypical to me. Too yellow. Never seen them looking like this, even when old and/or sun-bleached. And the real G. lucidum we have here has a stipe even when growing from trees.

Ganoderma Tsugae, possibly. Sometimes high C02 environments can cause mutations. Size shape and color can be affected.

Looks like Piptoporus betulinus to me...  But what do I know?  Was it on birch, dead or alive?

No joy, battling TI's.  If no TI chimes in seconding birch polypore, then not.

lmgtfy

Research the suggestions you've been given and see what YOU think, you've got the thing.

In the meantime, you might get it sliced and dried.  Cross section pics might help resolve.

Alright thanks for helping though...I think its reishi...or that other ganoderma tsugae one but even if im wrong there are no known species in polypores that are poisonous so if it is a polypore then no matter if its reishi or not this is safe to consume right?

Yeh, but there'd be no point in bothering to prepare it for tea if it's not one of the good ganodermas.

BUT, if you don't do something to get it dry quickly it's gonna rot.  Catch-22.

Did you section it?

All tree conks contain immunomodulating compounds. All known tree conks are edible as of today's knowledge database.

Where you at?  Might be g. curtisii.  Cut it in half and show us the flesh, reishi has a nice red tone to it.
EDIT
Either way, it might be too old and nasty to be of use.

I was beginning to suspect that...

Even if it is  birch polypore....it has many medicinal uses...It can be used as a antiseptic and a anesthetic. You can make a field bandaid out of it. or it can be used in dried form to start fires. They found some on that iceman dude...the 5000 yr. old mummy. Pretty cool stuff, I must say.:sunny::peace:M

Piptoporus betulinus has an awful acidic smell (reminds me of when we synthesized aspirin/salicylic acid in high school chemistry) and it is only used to get rid of worms/intestinal parasites.  If I remember the mechanism of action correctly, it does so by giving you massive diarrhea, so while I doubt that is what it is, I don't recommend anyone going around eating birch polypores.

Extremely effective, too. At least as much so as a man made one.

I have not read this. It may be used for those things but I've not read about it being it's only use.

Nor did I....there is a wealth of information available though. I actually ate a small piece last weekend ...wasn't that terribly acidic smelling or tasting and I did not get anything near diarrhea. I also made a bandaid out of it.which does indeed work...it sticks to itself like plaster.

HOW did you make a bandaid?  Just take a slice thru the whole conk?  Enquiring minds wanna know!
