Mushrooms guides?
    #1880406 - 09/04/03 07:30 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Hi all,

I'm looking for a good mushroom guide featuring species that occur in Western Europe. I have a nice mushroom ecyclopedia at the moment, but I miss many, many species and the descriptions are not always very detailed. Any advice?

I would check out,
Mushrooms and other Fungi of Great Britain & Europe
by Roger Phillips
I have not seen this book, but I have his Mushrooms of North America, it has great pictures and discriptions.

I agree with Phillips. The only negative about that book is the lack of detailed keys.

If you want good keys, look for a copy of Keys to Agarics and Boleti by Meinhard Moser (translated by Roger Phillips). It's one of the best references to fungi around.

If you got cash, look into the various Breitenbach volumes. Incredible stuff, but rather steep in price.

If you can read French or German (or other languages) your selection goes up pretty quickly.

Also, try checking locally for a mycological society. They'll be able to point you to the best books for local use.

Happy mushrooming!

That should help you for a start and then there is Roger heim;'s Champignons Supiorers, two volumes of the Eropean mushrooms.

Ok, looks good! I've seen the Adelaars book once, it's nice. I think I'll go and look for the Phillips book (always very beautiful pictures in his books) and the Moser volume, perhaps I'll stumble into them. Btw, I picked up a little German book a couple of weeks ago, Taschenbuch f?r Pilzfreunde (Hennig/Kreisel), but unfortunately it's rather outdated and it doesn't feature photos, only drawings.

Thanks all!

The Moser book has no photos, only drawings towards the back. On the other hand, it has the best keys around. If you learn to ID with it, you will really know how to ID. Try not to be too dependent on photos.

Yeah, I'd really like to get my hands on a book with good keys, but I also like books with nice pics (mostly to drewl over  ), but on identification, I agree with you, pics are not the way to go. Though they can be helpful in quickly finding possible matches, IMO.
