inducted into this subculture
Eh, you might wanna restate that in a way that doesn't make it sound like a creepy cult.
If you were to hang about here for awhile and read threads the answers to some of those questions will become obvious.
-------------------- "Shrub, 30-90 cm. Leaves 2.5-) 4-9 cm, sessile or amplexicaul, broadly ovate to ovate-oblong, obtuse or rounded to subapiculate or subacute, when crushed not smelling of goats." "The initial quake was a 6.6 but fairly shallow. I felt it as a prolonged up and down vibration followed by a jolt forward and then to the left, like square dancing."

the emphasis is how the information is shared with others. most people are taken into the woods and taught first hand from someone who has the knowledge already. its a pretty intimate face to face way of learning in the field that you don't see in too many other instances. its not meant to sound like a cult.

I don't know how true this is, at least in the states. Most of the folks I know that have a true interest in mycology as opposed to being a commercial picker that cares nothing for the hobby are self taught from maybe a few books or online info, then once they catch the bug they end up somewhere like here or a club to get positive ids, build knowledge and confidence. Seems to be a rather solitary effort most of the time, one or two folks crashing about in the woods on their knees half the time.
I think in some other countries there are traditions around mushroom hunting, so you learn from your family or community, but that seems to be mighty rare here. True buffs are pretty few and far between. An interesting stat for you might be to try and ferret out what percentage of the population are in clubs, active forums and such vs the total population. I'll wager it's smaller than miniscule.
I'll bet most folks here can attest to their friends/family being rather mystified as to why they'd go to the trouble for these slimy stinky dirty things. LOL. And all that studying and painstaking photography, etc.

Perhaps you would benefit more from a RESEARCH methods class.
Or perhaps you're just trolling.
