Working for ex-Psychiatrist?

I'm going to call my (former) psychiatrist tonight about working for him. I'm currently working at McDonalds and I feel like I'm just wasting my life away. Working for him would provide meaning/accomplishment for my next few months at home, and working for him has come up twice:
Once, he misunderstood me and started talking about how it's an unusual idea, a patient working for their doctor, but that he thinks, "they [affiliated university?] would go for that".
I actually asked around my last appointment and he said he'll think about it (our relationship kind of drifted a little bit) but that, "we can always use more bright people around."
SOOO... this isn't totally unrealistic.
What advice do you have for me, or how would you approach this?
My plan is to call him tonight and ask him to accept a proposal with a couple ideas as well as to guage how open he is to it.
I'm going to open the proposition in Socratic style, i.e. "So, you said you want to see me succeed" (Yes) "And also, you want to do what you can to help me succeed and get back on track/using my potential" (YES) [ETC.]
... And then I'll pitch how researching for/with him could turn this underemployment rut into a huge opportunity that will serve me my whole career.
Talking Points/Ideas: Would love to get a yay or a nay on these
- very interested in brain/pharmacology, already have a foundation (I'll remind him of our last appointment where he, impressed, told my dad that I knew a lot (motioning to a pharmacology book and a brain book on the table)
- am being underutilized/underemployed in my fast food job right now
- this would give me something to do to slake the intellect as well as start turning around my resume, steering it towards more-impressive territories
-[???] I'm no longer his patient so there's no conflict of interest
-[???] I'm willing, as part of my employment, to try to give up drugs (and perhaps could mention that I feel a lot of my use of drugs is simply pacifying a very intellectual mind that has been getting very little academic feeding)
Please help! Thanks and I love ya'll

Was looking a little for advice on the approach, although the fact that someone on the internet thinks I should do this speaks volumes about the idea!

s1llnox if you're reading this, you've taken too much DXM, life is really like the Truman show. They made that movie to fool you and you haven't seen it yet. If you're seeing this message you're receiving different frequencies in your brain right now and we'll be on the phone as you read this very word. They tricked you; run. I am. Good lu

I wouldn't try mind games with a psychiatrist
Just ask him if you could become his assistant, no biggie. Don't sound desperate, be firm and confident.
Also, you SHOULD give up drugs, if you get this position.
Good luck man!

Maybe if I make it into too big of a deal/make it SEEM elusive, that would make it seem like it's a further stretch than it really is (which, hopefully, is not a stretch!).
I'll ask... wish me luck!

What kind of research? Of critical importance will be whether it is human or animal.
Your best bet is to look at pubmed and/or his CV and determine what kinds of research he has done previously. It's very rare, and an enormous undertaking to begin a brand new area of research. For example, you don't just "start up" a whole line of animal research if you've never done it before.
Take his existing research/techniques and spin it in a new direction, don't come up with something completely novel (even if its a good idea).
Academia is a business: Follow the money. If your idea can gain quick, financial support, it'll fly. Some departments have internal "seed money" that can get ideas off the ground, and then you can obtain pilot data for a future R01 (a "big" grant).

I have known myself in a way I doubt I would have ever occurred except as it did. Smith, P. Bull. Menninger Clinic (1959) 23:20-27; p. 27. ...most subjects find the experience valuable, some find it frightening, and many say that is it uniquely lovely. Osmond, H. Thanks for this very thorough (and useful!) reply! I'll keep all this in mind, and that's reassuring that he'd rather expand something he's already working on as I have some ideas for something he's already done/worked on.
Now to work up the guts to call, I suppose...

Oh I'm sorry... did this suddenly become not true? You better not espouse too much of my old quotes, Joie, given your... aspirations
That is actually a nice bit of irony to bring up, but having had my last research gig funded by Monsanto, doing perfectly well for the world and maintaining my morals has become severely less important.
