Mexico looks such a good place to hunt for shrooms, maybe one day I'll be lucky enough to go there and see them for myself

Or Morgan Freeman. No, maybe Indiana Jones? Or Lewis... and Clark. Barbara Walters?

The habitat for Psilocybe neoxalapensis is very close to that of where the Psilocybe caerulescens/weilii grow here in Georgia.
That being said, Alan have you ever discovered Psilocybe caerulescens in the same area as Psilocybe neoxalapensis. Do they even fruit in the same season.
My thinking is, that the Georgia Psilocybe caerulescens/weilii will fruit where the Mexican Psilocybe neoxalapensis does and vise versa.
Any way we could put that to the test?

I was actively hunting for Psilocybes in the Fagicola complex in mixed Beech, Oak, and Pine forests this summer when we were having very tropical weather. I may begin checking those habitats I found as the weather cools a bit and rainfall picks up a little more. Better believe I shat my pants thinking I found something interesting when I found this and similar Deconicas in those habitats. I believe without a doubt in my mind that there are Psilocybes in the Fagicola complex here in Georgia.

I walk through a heavily populated Beech and oak area quite often. What specific mushroom would you look for in a location like this? It is along a small creek.

No, I would not expect them to fruit near each other. P. caerulescens is usually lower, and is in landslides and really disturbed ground. P. neoxalapensis is out in the middle of the woods, with only natural disturbances nearby. P. caerulescens likes large landslides with human disturbance, P. caerulescens likes small landslides that are made by nature out in the middle of nowhere. P. neoxalapensis likes landslides that are 2 - 3 feet tall, more like steep hills. Sometimes in ravines.

They fruit at the same time, in different places.

I can send out some gill fragments and then you can find out for sure.

When you see the P. fagicola complex, it looks really unique. You will know it is a psilocybe just by looking at it. They do occur in the southern USA, but they are rare and people do not collect them because they look like Galerina vittaeformis or Deconica.

Alan, let me know when you want to come to GA. Maybe it's time we put someone with a wide variety of experience on the scene. This being you of course. I believe the GA hunters are finding two specific types maybe three. This is based off the 3 main habitats they are typically found in.
There has to be a reason why what I find will not grow in the grasses next to the woods. They specifically fruit off the trail or open area. That doesn't seem the case with what other people are finding on here.
I am ready to give up the secret to the woodland var. I know where the woodland are prior to the season and after...even if you dropped me off in an area within the fruiting environment. I haven't given it out yet because I'm just not comfortable telling everyone about it.
It took many years to figure this out and so much hard work. Let me clarify something, just because I find the area, doesn't mean it will all produce fruits. This is where I need an outsider with more knowledge to give input. Unfortunately I am just the hunter who uses tried and true methods. I can not explain why, but can tell you what will happen.
If you don't come to GA, invite me to Mexico I can put my method to use over there. If it works, I will be more incline to except that all these species are one with no differences.

I have no immediate plans to go to GA. You are welcome to show up in Mexico. I am in Jalisco at the moment. You should probably go now because rainy season is going to end soon and I am not sure that I will return to Mexico next year. At the moment I am in Talpa de Allende, you would take a bus there from Guadalajara and I could drive you around in my jeep from there.
