Your earliest memory
    #18803658 - 09/05/13 02:58 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

What is the first memory you have of your existence?
Mine was being in a montessori school.
They wanted me to eat a tomato, but I didn't want to so I wrapped it up in a napkin and threw out out... Nobody ever had a clue :smirk:

I was 2 or 3, playing in a kiddie pool with my brother fighting over a toy plane. He took the plane from me and hit me in the head with it so I pushed him and he fell backwards and out of the pool and started crying.

There are pictures of it and I saw them around 12 or so and realized I remembered that day.

I don't know, this is a tough one. I was thinking about this the other day, though. Sometimes I'll have these random memories pop in my head from when I was like around 4 or 5 years old. It's weird how certain memories, for whatever reason, were strong enough to leave an imprint like that to where it remains with you for that long.

Mine was at a family reunion. We were at a family pick nick and my cousin took me down to this stream. I remember there was a steep bank you had to walk down and on the way back up it I was really struggling. So instead of helping me he told me to step in the makeshift foot holes that people left from walking up the thing and I made it. I don't know why but it was a good memory.

One time I was on acid about two years ago and I had a flash of memory from when I was like 6 months old. I remember being in the living room in our old house and my dad was in the room. It's only like two seconds of memory but it's deep. Maybe I just created the memory in my mind and those two seconds never happened that way.

Aside from that I remember the bulk of my childhood with all sorts of various memories.

Ahh yeah I remember the morning of my last day of Kindergarten. All the other kids in daycare were doing what they'd normally do in the mornings before school, running around, playing tag, drawing things on the ground with chalk. I instead ran around shouting and singing "IT'S THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL!" until the bus came.

Re: Your earliest memory [Re: Shroomopotamus]

I recently saw a picture of my self, it was when I was getting my first hair cut. I asked my mom how old I was in the picture because I remember that day pretty well. I was right around 2 years old. I remember I was freaked out about the hair clippers, so the lady cutting my hair put it on my arm to show me it wasn't going to hurt me. I think we got ice cream right after that.

Using that memory as a reference point, I have some memories that go back a bit before that, maybe as far back as 18 months old.

I think I have a pretty good memory...My working memory (short term) isn't the best, I often do things like locking keys in a car, or losing something I just set down, etc....But I remember the details of my past pretty well and easily. (even with smoking cannabis daily  :smirk: ) . I can recall a moment of my past and a cascade of memories and details around that moment come back to me.

I also remember many of the dreams I've had through out my life. I can think of a particular dream, and every dream I've had that either took place in the same setting (I often go to the same locations/places in my dreams, it's like an actual seperate world) or has common associations or relations to that dream will start to come to me like a stream of memories.

Most of my early memories are vague...like fractured memories of dreams. It's kind of hard for me to differentiate my very earliest of memories from my dreams. I also have some bits of memories that are very dream like that don't seem to be from "this life". But I'm not going to go off on that tangent.

Im pretty sure I remember my mom changin my diaper in the bathroom. Thats prolly my earliest memory.  I also remember my little high chair thing I ate on. Had a teddy bear face on it and was all multi colored speckled and trippy. And my first nightmare of a zombie comin out a closet at me and I couln't crawl up the steps in time to get to my dad.

I was maybe 3yo, when I unzipped the zipper from our beanbag chair and my dad sat on it

That's the earliest I can think of atm, like Niffla said, these memories pop out of nowhere, I usually forget them pretty quick.

On a side note, I remember the first(=2nd)time I smelled pot at the age of 14, and instantly had this deja vu moment. Took me a while to remember where had I smelled it before..

Turned out to be at my friends house when I was like 5-6, his parents smoked pot and I realized this while smoking with them ten years later

My first memory was a deception, too :tongue2:

The day I realized that if I heard someone walking down my hallway during nap-time, I could get in bed for a minute, close my eyes, and would appear to be asleep. Then they would leave and I could resume shoving stuff up my nose and eating felt-tip markers and catfood and other normal 2-3 year old stuff.

Are you serious? Man I have not one single memory from being an actual baby. And never will. All of my earliest memories are from after I learned to talk and walk. I think your admin status has given you powers far beyond my meager and pedestrian comprehension.

I don't remember.

Although I do recall watching my dad take out the trash one day and coming to the realization that I was me, and he was a different person, and all that kinda jazz. It was pretty trippy. Like coming out of ego death or something.

In general though I have pretty terrible memory. My first solid memories that I know for sure happened are probably like from the third grade.

Here'a a memory.

When I was 3 (I think?) I was at daycare and really needed to pee. So I went to this lady and told her that. She said something along the lines of "well you better go now because they're about to clean the bathrooms soon and you won't be able to go in there for a little while". So I pissed. Right there. In my pants.

I thought she meant go now, go as in pee -- right there at that very second.

True story.

I definitely don't have any memories from that young that are so clear/detailed. Like, I remember at some point in my life when I was a very small child I was drawing shapes at a table and writing letters with my baby sitter. But I don't have any memories that are of things happening or anything like that.

My 3 year old birthday party. Touching the hot burner on the stove top with my finger at age 3, after being told not to do so.

So I would say age 3 for myself, I think photos and discussions about the experience helps keep the memory more accessible.

I remember my Dad carrying me to my crib and I was crying probably because I didn't want to go to bed. On the way over I reached out and broke a full length mirror leaning against the wall. It came crashing on the floor and freaked me out. At least my seven years of bad luck was over early.

I also remember eating a really hot pepper when I was like 3 or 4 -- my mom was preparing dinner and I was hungry as fuck. I was throwing a tantrum. She told me to just wait because it would be ready soon. There were some peppers (serrano peppers maybe? idk) on a plate on the table and I scarfed one.

Cried like a bitch afterwards. God I was such a pussy.

I can't stand when remniscing with older people and they'll say do you remember when you ... and initially i'll say no, because that was when i waas three, but it gets stuck in my head so vividly i remember it later. Is that really considered a memory? I mean for all i honestly know someone could make upa belieavable scenario and if i picture it happening as vividly as the rest of my memories it might as well be. But can you say it really happened, or you even remember it when someone has to tell you before you picture it? does anyone else ever experience this?

First day of pre-school I forgot to brush my teeth before school and threw a tantrum insisting that I had to brush my teeth.

Now I'm 24 and haven't brushed them all day and give no fucks.

I also vaguely remember barely being able to walk and there being so much snow that i walked off the porch into it and sank down to chest level, obviously freaking out.

And around the same time my mom warning me that "the stove is hot," me not believing her since I knew she flipped the switch off, and pulling a chair over so i could stick hand directly on it.

I remember around 1-2 years of age we had a 2 story house in Poly (suburb in DFW) a black maid, a Studebaker in the driveway (mom told me this about the car) I remember some scenes of another bigger black lady (the maid). The maid told my sister to go wake up my older brother. So she did, by whacking the straw end of a broom down on him making him scream and cry!

I also remember being in the backseat of a car and the back of my mom and dads heads in the front. There was a Dr. Pepper in the middle console drink holder thing and we hit a bump splashing the cola up into the air and right back down into the bottle without spilling hardly any!

I know you all are going to think this next one is made up, but it is true to my memory. My older sister had the garage as her room. One night when my mom was gone and she was babysitting us (my bro and I, probably me 6-8 and him 8-10) she had a party. There was a giant hukah in the living room floor with 8 hoses.

A guy with waist length blond hair was playing the flute and several other people were high and probably tripping. She gave us the hose and told us to breath in deep! (first time I smoked weed too) we ran around coughing and such. The people there were laying on the floor staring at the ceiling. I jump right on top of him with feet on both sides of his head and look into his face and yell "HEY!"

His eyes just get really wide and he sits up slowly and starts to walk out mumbling and shit. My brother got a cookie jar and was operating the lid like a mouth and saying "I am the cookie jar!" loads of laughter and good times were had by all!

She denies any of this to this day of course. She is a Mormon now, a multiple wife Mormon! Switched in her 40's a few years ago, and sent my mom a pic of her holding the younger woman's baby. I could write a screenplay i tell ya!

Just thought of another story about tomatoes since you mentioned it. My babysitter was a religious nut of some kind. She wanted me to eat tomatoes one time and I refused. She grabs the toms and shoves them into my mouth and down my throat! I spewed all over her hand and the table! She could have killed me in hindsight! That babysitter was areal freak show. Her 15 year old son molested me and my brother, he would shoot birds with a BB gun and feed them to the cat and luagh about "the bones crunching" and he and a friend of his broke my arm very badly while playing one day. *SIGH* ahhh the good ol' days of my youth.
