Help with Oyster bag please SUPER UPDATE (pg 2)!
    #18803120 - 09/05/13 12:10 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

How does this bag look? Its almost fully colonized and I'm almost certain this patch is metabolites. How can I get this to fruit? Is it safe to remove from the bag or should I poke a few holes in it and just stick it in my green house?

After reading the mushroom bible Ive decided to poke some arrow head holes and to set them outside under some trees. Turns out even if it IS metabolites when too many start growing the chance for contaminants to grow increases.

Not only that but these bags were set up 8/19 which means that its been over two weeks. The book states that if something doesnt colonize by two weeks (in regards to sawdust at least)......contaminants in your substrate are likely. I think the REAL reason these bags havnt gone 100% is because I didnt disperse the grain evenly. Combine that with a bunch of compact/wet sawdust with no larger mediums for the mycellium to grab onto and push forward through the compact stuff, it makes sense they have not gone 100%.

When cutting the bags they smelled prime, just how they were supposed to smell :datass: Kind of sweet and Almondy, but we shall see. Hopefully primordia starts to form within 3 to 5 days. Ill keep the pictures updated of all my bags chilling outside on a log :pokerawe:

For those of you trying to grow mushrooms read some of the chapters in Pauls book. I probably could of had mushrooms to harvest already If I did this "by the books".

I'd just cut some x's and stick it in the GH.  In the future, with oysters, you usually cut x's or holes in whatever your substrate is in at spawning, unlike other species where you wait for full colonization.

My guess is too wet of a substrate.  That will slow even oysters down.  Drain any extra out if you can, and they should still fruit.

Thanks I was wondering about that  Here I am stabbing my bags in the middle of my night in my underwear tearing up the substrate, thinking to myself (I wonder if this was to be done earlier). Its a learning experience I guess. Even if I get one patch of mushrooms to throw into one omelet I will consider this a success :bored: Hopefully though there is more to share with my neighbors though. Funny you mention the water issue too. They did seem a bit damp to me while colonizing. However my reishi spawn in the tubs ive posted chewed through the sawdust that was filled with the same amount of boiling water :strokebeard:

Yeah I get different results using the same amount of pellet:water ratio sometimes too.  Been having a lot of problems with it lately actually...

Then i get the "what the hell are you doing?" from the wife when i wake her up.  :laugh2:

I have found that this technique of cutting holes right after inoculation can be used with most mushrooms as long as they are pasteurized and unsupplemented. I have tried this with lions mane, shiitake, reishi & enoki all on sawdust.

Awesome man I was actually kind of wondering about that, but haven't tried it with anything else yet.

Success!!!

So I took a couple blocks from the bags I had that looked weak and were not doing very good, and decided to cut them outside the bag and see if I could fruit them. Well a freaking week or so....maybe a little more and NOTHING! The temperature has been in the freaking 75's (which is hot for where I am) and the sun has been blazing all day everyday :bored: The blocks were drying out and in an act of desperation I took the bottle I use to mist them and dumped out all the water on each block :onfire:

Look what just popped up! I cant believe it! My soon to me first mushrooms If I play my cards right! And here are the other bags that Im leaving inside the bag for moisture control. How exciting :datass:

Nice job man. I'd keep an eye on those bags though to prevent slugs/flies/worms from harvesting their share. Always been a problem in my backyard...

I've been finding my shiitakes partly eaten in the back yard as well as getting alot of gnats or whatever they may be around my oysters.  Tomorrow I plan to spray all the oyster blocks down and remove them from bags to see what transpires and hopefully get any residual stem off.

Well there are a TON of pins that have popped up all over the block, but flies are absolutely SWARMED around them. I just checked out there this evening and ill be amazed if I can get any of these things to a plate.

Assuming I harvest them and nothing has hatched yet, and I fry the mushrooms are they safe to eat. Im almost certain they will be littered with eggs within the next few days :bored: Thoughts? Experiences? People eat bugs in tribal societies right? Any brain eating mushroom larva I need to know about?

I just harvested some outdoor oysters...  look carefully when you cut them apart.  If they're kind of hollow watch out for nasty little white worms.  That's what I keep getting.  They get in there and eat the insides out.  Had to throw out a 6" oyster tonight because it was filled with the little fuckers.

Or just don't look at all, fry 'em up and enjoy the extra protein :dancingbacon:  Eating a few bugs ain't gonna kill ya

So heres an update. Please tell me what you think or if there are any red flags

They look beautiful. The flies lay off them in the day time, hopefully they have a chance to thrive. Kind of cute if you see something took a bite then decided to leave them alone

I cant tell if this is mold or mycellium. Its kind of freaking me out so I dont really.....breath when im near these bags  Might of been a mycologist hypochondriac while I was cutting the bags and holding my breath but look closely. You can see pins. In fact allot of these weird little bumps are actually pins starting! What do you guys think?

Moved this reishi mono tub outside because I have no idea whats normal and whats could potentially be grow room ruining mold. Its hauling ass though  I cant tell if those are reishi starting to form or horrid patches of mold. Once again I hold my breath when I lift the lid to check on them :strokebeard: They are also sweating allot. Thoughts?

The oysters look maybe too wet?  As for your reishi maybe forrester can ring in on this one but I believe he showed someone the other day that this was normal

Yep it's quite normal for reishi to look pretty gnarly.  I wouldn't worry.  I can almost guarantee you it's not mold, so no reason to move outside.

Looks like some metabolites, so it might be fighting off some bacteria or something, but I've never seen it lose.  If it does, I'll send you my culture, it's got a flawless record

breathe easy my friend. I think the only dangerous spores to breathe in are black and forest green(aspergillus); and to my knowledge there are no dangerous forms of mycelium, lest you eat them.
