How dose lsd/mushrooms change your body chemistry
    #18802584 - 09/05/13 09:21 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I was did some searches with little result, I'm sure this has been discussed here before..
But yeah Iive been reading some micro dose threads when I saw some one mentioned that these substances we choose to talk Chang our chemistry for ever, and I was wondering how lsd, mushrooms or dmt alter our biochemistry after we take them, is this a permeant change or temporary? Is it for better or for worse? Better yesterday is there a balance a limbo~
Pre-thank you for the info!

This is a question I have been pondering for a while now too. It's definitely been discussed before, but ideas are always good.

The psychedelic experience is not guaranteed to be enjoyable or a stereotypical "fun" experience, but in the long run, these substances are medicine. While normal medicine focuses on the physical body, you cannot ignore the spiritual side of health and overall happiness. By ingesting these compounds, I've wondered if it is a change of being opened up more to a cosmic connection that all humans inheritantly have, but lose over time due to the hectic lifestyles we live in the 21st century and the social over-conditioning that slowly work their way into our consciousness.
It is truly astounding that LSD, psilocin/psilocybin, and DMT all have the ability to peel off the layers you and allow you to open up to the world. When in the right environment, with people who are full of love and care, these compounds produce experiences which are very similar to people's near death experiences and really show that there is a reality behind our reality, how time and all it's constructs are merely a plane. If you want some good reading material on this subject, read "Einstein's God".Is it for better or for worse? That's ALL up to you. You have to remember that we are social animals. If we start partaking in behaviour that is not condoned by our peers, then we will most likely feel like a black sheep or left out. Many people probably have a hard time ingesting psychedelics because of the fear that somebody will come down upon them and they will be casted out of society. We all crave a meaning, a place in society where we have a task, a mission to complete for the greater good. If you remove this, then people become hopeless. Almost all of us have been raised in environments that tell us "all "drugs" will ruin your life". The widespread paranoia and people blindly following group think lead to social exclusion, whether it be internal or external. You must have trusted people who you are very comfortable around to discuss the psychedelic experience with. After experiencing such a rich and deep place, it can tear you apart not being able to express it. Discuss it with someone who is unfamiliar or still washed with the whole idea that "you take these "drugs" and you will go crazy and end up in a mental hospital and your life will be ruined-stop it!" mentality, then it can have bad mental effects on you. Like I said, discuss the experience with those who have experienced and present yourself in a respectable manner.
It is highly recommended that these compounds should only be used in the presence of others, people who are caring and you feel comfortable around. It makes the whole experience much deeper and will allow you to explore much more.
After pursuing a deeply ingrained interest in neurobiology, the conclusion is that with our rudimentary scientific knowledge of the brain, there is absolutely no way that we can explain what happens during the psychedelic experience with the brain. No way!
These compounds have the ability to cleanse the soul and rebirth you. A friend of a friend was once a firm atheist and studies biology, now he is open to the idea of a higher power and (gasp!) even a god!
Or is this all tomfoolery? Does the ingested substance merely temporarily alter the neurotransmitter receptors and the amount of neurotransmitters produced in the brain, which would be a plausible explanation to why there are long lasting effects in the brain. For example, psilocycin is chemically similar to serotonin. When it crosses the blood/brain barrier and attaches to these receptors, a whole cascade of effects are put into motion by the filling of these receptors. For the short run, the brain thinks it has waaay too much serotonin. To compensate, the receptors may decrease in density or temporarily retract into the postsynaptic terminal of the neuron. For the upcoming days, the brain realizes that it needs more serotonin, so it produces more serotonin and as these serotonin receptors re-emerge from the neuron, they are met with higher than ever levels of serotonin, thus the reason why we may be happier in the long run after having come into contact with these psychoactive compounds.
But this seems too simple. It still does not fully explain the experiences. Brain scans and all that jazz to measure brain activity during epileptic seizures which evoke experiences similar to the psychedelic experience and near death experiences have been shown to activate certain parts of the brain responsible for feelings of religiousness and spiritual connection. Is is simply because there is a higher density of 5-HT receptors in this part of the brain for these compounds to attach to, thus the reason they have this sort of effect?
The scientific side of me wants to know, but on the other hand, the spiritual side of me says that there is no way that all of these effects can be caused by ingesting a simple compound. If anything, it's that these compounds act like a key to a door, opening up a world which we normally do not experience due to the evolutionary advantage we all have of experiencing a similar "reality".
I love the experience of seeing the world through the same eyes I did when I was a child. How everything feels new again, how the restrictions I imposed on myself were so silly, and how I can be a light person and the path that I am in is not the only way is amazing. Psychs will open up your soul and make you much more open with people, ideas, and life. You might as well make the most of it!
