Urlacher admits Bears faked some injuries
    #18802307 - 09/05/13 07:11 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

http://espn.go.com/chicago/nfl/story/_/id/9634085/brian-urlacher-admits-chicago-bears-faked-some-injuries

Quote:

Former Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher, now an analyst for Fox Sports 1, lifted the lid Tuesday off a commonly used practice in college and the NFL.

Urlacher revealed that, during his tenure with the Bears, the team -- like other clubs around the league -- would fake injuries to slow high-powered offenses.

"We had a guy who was the designated dive guy," Urlacher said, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Urlacher went on to say that a Bears coach would simulate the diving motion a swimmer makes with his arms, and the player designated as the dive guy "would get hurt."

Urlacher said the team wasn't coached on how to fake injuries but said the practice was part of the Bears' game plan.

Urlacher played for the Bears from 2000-12. He was selected to eight Pro Bowls and was an All-Pro on five occasions.

Is this news to you?

I've seen it a few times in the past. I think it was bengals or cowboys where the coach gave this player a nod and the player would suddenly hunch over even after the play had finished.

I remember a couple years back when 2 Giants players faked an injury at the same time, can't remember who they were playing. Both standing still after the whistle then falling over like they were just shot. Kind of reminds me of icing a kicker and calling the timeout just before the snap so that the kick goes off but doesn't count.

Probably everybody is doing it, and it's only going to get worse with more hurry up offenses. I don't know how you can officiate for it. How do you prove somebody didn't get shaken up on a play. Maybe they could have a rule that when a player stops play, he has to stay out for so many plays.

Still Urlacher should have kept his mouth shut.
