What is this contamination and how can I avoid it?
    #18801836 - 09/05/13 02:13 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hello,

I've got a little problem preparing rye.
Since years I only used wheat, but that's to often sold out - so I deceided to switch substrate grain.
This is how I do it: In the afternoon I boil water and pour it over the rye to let it soak over night, next day I rinse it and again put boiling water over. Last rinse when the whole thing cooled down.
Then jars and 90min@pressurecooker.
Inokulation via G2G in front of flowhood.

This is what my last two charges look like after seven days.
What is this? Bacteria?
What would you do?

Thanks for reading, hope you can help!

That is yeast.

Either your master jar was contam'd (and it hid) or your sterile technique needs work. Or both.

Only thing to do now is sterilize the jars and throw the contents out. Don't open that without PCing again for 90 min...yeast is extremely prolific.

It seems that this a similiar contamn like the one, which is growing in a Panaeolus jar I Show at the contamination thread. In my case, the print was not clean - a not inoculated jar shows no contamn till now.
Anyway, yes it seems to be some kind of yeast, maybe mixed with some bacteria. I will let mine grow for another few weeks at 26 °C to get informations of the contamn in more detail...

Thanks for your answers.
I already trashed the jars from the picture without PCing them...
BUT unfortunately I got plenty of others with that and will do as Frank said.
It probably is because of the master jar - I took a grow-break from mid july till now, it was old and the mycelium was not the best.

New jars are already inokulated with fresh spores - the grow must go on!

Hallo MND!
