Doing a mini bulk grow in a plastic tub inside of a SGFC. Using horse manure since I have a free source. But there is SO MUCH DISCREPANCY about what to supplement it with! I've seen suggestions of straw, vermiculite, coir, and everything in between, but what do ya'll see as the best? I'd say the order of priority for when I saw "best" is Potency > Weight > Speed. So what's up guys? Advise me! Please. haha

Supplement it with verm.
If you want to go further, supplement 25% of it or so with coir.
Supplementing with verm and coir increases moisture retention and improves the texture of the hpoo.

Nice, I really didn't think to add a third main ingrediant as well, but I do have everything necessary for that. So say, 50% manure, 25% coir, 25% verm. I suppose I'll go figure out how much each block of coir comes out to... But yeah thanks again Frank.

A brick of coir will come out to 8 to 10 quarts.

Assuming your substrate is properly prepared and hydrated, all 3 of those factors are mostly dictated by the genetics you're working with. You can grow potent, heavy, fast cubes without using extra additives.

There was that scientific study of vegetable oil a few years back that showed positive results that people were talking about. I've heard vegetable oil also has a low contamination risk as it can just be non-refrigerated and nothing happens to it.
I wonder why people don't use it more? Wonder what it's negative is?
-------------------- A bit expensive but the largest clear tote I've found. Great if you want a large SGFC that can easily do both trays and cakes. If you decide to go all out on a SGFC, be sure to get coarse perlite. It keeps it cleaner and allows better FAE and humidity.

Agreed 100%.

It doesn't get used because it serves no obvious purpose in the end.
It doesn't speed colonization, it doesn't improve yields.
Monstermitch's old recipe called for a shot of veg. oil but I tried it out in the last year and saw zero difference in end result, across a few tubs of the same isolate.
There is also a couple drops of veg oil used in a few different LC media recipes I am aware of...but that is to keep the myc from clumping as far as I know.

8 quarts a brick wow that's fuckin awesome. Gonna have to use a fraction of a brick in that case. Which is good news cuz I'll be whipping up some practice batches to get it right so I'm ready for spawn
Also gonna check out those chicken manure pellets, wonder if I can find a local source...
That's really good to know about the genetics, I've been getting myself excited about possibly moving away from spore syringes. If anyone has any input on where they'd think I should start in that department, feel free. Thanks everyone.
