The brain is pretty much all there is and you should be lucky if you've got a good one
    #18797574 - 09/04/13 12:41 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

And if it's not so great you should be seeking to improve it, and that alone. There is no other real task. Brain training, vitamins, exercise, and whatever else you can find... the brain is really 99% of what is happening to you, there may be no 'outside' of it as seems pretty obvious on mushrooms to me, and seems obvious in OBEs, and in the fact that dreams / hallucinations are just as convincing as reality.

Very good, smart brains have the advantage of pure processing power. I think many brains have the speciality of sheer imaginative power and I think this is the really good one to have as what your mind is imagining or experiencing co-creates the reality around you if you let it, so it can make life really interesting.

But these great brains just have a more complex upgrade path ahead of them, with the intention of expressing the inner energies of the species, for the good of the species and as a way of paying our respects to the mystery of Nature and why She gave us thumbs and a cerebral cortex. That is to say, we ought to be sharing in the magic of being human together, just as everything you're using right now including your computer and the fridge etc. were all someone else's brilliant idea that is now something we all share in.

But yeah, evolve your brain, improve your brain. You can listen to music and block it right out and it's a real shame. Or you can activate your nervous system as it is activated on LSD or psilocybin and enjoy an enhanced effect, you just need to get there. There is so much to explore with our nervous system, it's just a matter of pulling the right levers.

Discuss.

2 of the most down to earth individuals I have ever met suffered severe brain damage. One in a car wreck that left him in a coma for a few months. The other spent a decade huffing glue. Both want the best for others but are very simple and direct in approach. You don't have to guess at their meaning. You don't have to worry about their ambition. You just have to be kind in return. IMO there are so many conflicting bits of information in the brain at any point in time that it often muddies something as simple as just being kind. To lose some of that extra baggage isn't necessarily a bad thing IME.

Man, I have a hard time believing that anyone who thought it was a good idea to huff glue for 10 years had a functioning brain to begin with.

There are myriad studies that show listening to music improves thinking. Here is a CNN article about it.

Anyway, I think I get what you're trying to say - that we use a lot of our "brain power" to find comfort & recreation, essentially spending our energy so that we're able to not use energy. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I seem to be dissatisfied with movies or TV while everyone I know spends their free time doing that activity & looking forward to it. IMO, it's not enjoyable & a waste of time. Don't get me wrong. I love to be entertained and appreciate a quality performance, but I'd rather be doing interactive activities, like researching and exercising and developing projects at this point in my life. I want to make an impact in the world & help people. IDK, I just can't get lost in fictional show. It's probably just different personality types.

My mom & I were talking about this earlier. It seems that some people are completely okay with doing the minimum amount required in life - they don't have big aspirations (in the sense of doing something groundbreaking) and follow the "normal" stream. I don't think they're "wrong" for it. I just feel like I need to do something different.

Ironically, I feel like that "something different" may be as simple as becoming the best version of myself that I can possibly be - being aware of my reactions & being in control of them.

I was just reading about confucianism and taoism in 1950s China. Confuscianism, this book said, established conventional norms. Things that should be done. A sort of societal and moral compass. Every society has this in some capacity it seems. But then taoism was there too. And Taoism this book said is what the older fellas would pick up. And although it broke down much of the order established by confucianism, it wasn't an attack. Taoism never tried to become the one and only religion. Instead it spoke of being free, a path towards liberation. What you do once you've said your piece and done what you intend. When there is no need to fit the mold any longer because you aren't trying to make or break anything.

Personally i ve hit that point already. I'm not trying to make or break anything. I'm the old fart who has had his fill of those pursuits and would much rather try a path towards freedom. Where do I fit in?

It's interesting that Taoism and Confucianism came on the scene at the same time. I suspect that they're the same religion only for different castes - i.e. Confucianism is for the warchief-king-ruler and Taoism for the shaman-magician-wise man.

Ideologically, Confucianism and Taoism don't have much in common. They're often combined, but they touch on very different subjects and areas of life. Confucius was almost completely concerned with how to rule ethically and be a good member of society, whereas Taoism is about achieving harmony with nature and the Universe. Many Taoist writers (Zhuangzi, for example) are actually quite critical of government and rulers in general.

I'm not drifting so much. I just realised after recovering from some brain issues that the brain is paramount in everything, and all the wonder lies in the nervous system. The latter came from just using the brain differently actually.

It's really a big divine dance to be alive. And it's all in the brain for us.

The spirit or other forms of ourselves I won't speculate on more except to say they exist because there was everything real about those experiences for me. And they came repeatedly.

What the spirit means depends on what you think the world is, it's pretty much up in the air if you're realistic. The important thing is here, now, and it's the brain that's here now.
