What other things can you look for when hunting
    #18801342 - 09/04/13 10:14 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hey wats up

Just wondering what else you guys keep an eye out for when you looking for mushrooms?

for example, spots to chill out, gold, other plants, herbs of interest, rocks of interest, etc...

I love when im getting tired from picking so many mushrooms then i stumble upon a perfect patch of berries to munch on... Huge energy boost to go pick more!

Around here i mostly find huckleberries, and evergreen huckleberries while hunting mushrooms.

Chicory, miner's lettuce, fiddlehead ferns and blackberries around these parts are usually easy to find.

Grouse are pretty easy to kill with a rock if you should happen to stumble on one.

Orchids, Monotropa, wintergreens (Pryola), and other myco-heterotrophs. Other types of parasitic plants, like Broomrapes, are interesting as well.

You can look out for Geocaches. I have found one myself accidentally one time while on a hunt.

At this time of year you can forage for berries/ flowers etc too.

Consider making wine or jam with what you can gather.

What is the point to Geocaches or find one? What does this accomplish?

They are just a hidden box with something random inside most of the time.  You're expected to take something and leave something for the next person.  We have found things like toys, balsa airplanes, and even a joint.

There is usually a notepad and pen to. You leave your name and date that you found the box. It's fun for some people.

I hunt out berries, birch nuts, cob nuts, unusual plants i don't often see i'll take a clipping.

Also have a fetish for minerals so any unusual rocks/stones i find i haul them back too - within reason!

There are lots of edibles you can look for depending on where you live and the time of year. Ramps, strawberry spinach, asparagus, horseradish, miners lettuce, berries of all sorts.

I usually hunt for edibles like berries and some stuff for a salad (things even as simple as nettle or even thistle). It depends where you live but a good salad leaf to look out for is wood sorrel, it tastes like apple peal and is really nice. I like to try and find my own lunch while I'm out and about instead of bringing one. You could also look for things to make, like a nice piece of wood for whittling maybe a spoon or something, or maybe even making string from the fibers of nettles.

Medicinal plants - mullein, yarrow, etc.

And what everyone else said.  I think you just develop an eye after awhile that discards the "usual" stuff so that interesting/new/known good stuff pops out.

Mojo.  We're getting some real rain, so maybe my mojo will return shortly.

Yeah knowing what grows around you're local area is key. There is no point in learning Spanish if you plan to move to France.
