My Subbs always bruise blue!
    #18800212 - 09/04/13 05:31 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I have heard from many sources that it is rare for subbs to bruise blue, even at the mycelia on the base of the stem.  However; the subbs I collect off fertile well watered lawns at the bottom of hills in partial shade or off freshly laid sod bruis blue on the mycelia almost every time.  Infact, I use that blue bruising as a basic identification characteristic of subbs.  Sure, it's not allways strikingly blue, usually it's faint and only at the very base in certain areas.  About one out of 20 subbs will have drastic blueing on the mycelia or bluing on the stem or cap.  Still, I've heard people say 1 out of 100 subbs will bruise at the mycelia, but I for me, it's more like 1 out of 100 won't.

My mushrooms are not particularly strong either, about 4 grams will give a nice strong 'level 2' trip.  The Shroomery calculator suggests it would only take 2.5.  I dry my mushrooms on a drying screen in the dark without a fan, then desiccate with silica gel.  I get about 1 dry gram for every 14.5 fresh grams.  I'm located in the 'midwest'.  The prints aredeffinetly black.  What are the chances I'm collecting P. olivacus and now knowing it?  I doubt it.

Look at the example below.

No responce yet? im suprised

Nice bluing, nice cincts! :congrats: :super: . I find that most collections will show bruising in at least a few fruit bodies, last observation I made there was bluing on the pileus!

The ones that blue on the pileus are where its at... Never found one like that. I think a lot of cinctulus show some oxidation in the base of the stem, it can just be hard to see against their darker reddish brown color as they dry.

I'm guessing the more subtle blueing goes un-noticed by most.  Sometimes, I pick a mushroom I suspect to be foe, brown gills, thick pale stem, conical cap, mycelia creeps up the stem, but all the sudden, the mycelia turns distinctly blur!  Makes me wonder how many subbs I've passed up thinking they were foes over the years.  Probably pounds.
