Giant Chicken of the woods and weird ant/insect formation

I stumbled across this giant Chicken of the woods, it looked really healthy, but I did not pick it. It had to be 18"-20" across.

I was walking by this tree and saw a thick black line going down it. As I got closer, I saw black ants lined up on the outer edge in single file. They outlined what I thought were eggs. I did not notice they were actual insects along with the ants.
The ants started scattering when I moved a branch to take the pic.

Some kind of sapsucking insect - the ants will tend them for the sweet effluvium they emit.
-------------------- "Shrub, 30-90 cm. Leaves 2.5-) 4-9 cm, sessile or amplexicaul, broadly ovate to ovate-oblong, obtuse or rounded to subapiculate or subacute, when crushed not smelling of goats." "The initial quake was a 6.6 but fairly shallow. I felt it as a prolonged up and down vibration followed by a jolt forward and then to the left, like square dancing."

How cool, they seem to work together well. I wish I could of got the pick with the ants on the outer edge. They were in a line about 8' long and 1" wide.

That WAS a live tree, right? I get small black aphids on my contorted willow and ivy... I can tell when they're there because some ants and some little beewasp kinda guys come around for the sweet. Maybe they're some kind of large aphid, you could start there if you were interested in id'ing them.
I WAS just thinking that it seems odd that they'd be sapsucking on a trunk, kinda tough... I wonder if they're some kind of bark beetle... Don't know much about this class of insects. A few of the guyz do landscape/plant work, maybe someone will recognize them as a pest species...
