Pholiota or Gymnopilus
    #18800742 - 09/04/13 07:52 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I found these mushrooms today and am not sure if they are Pholiota or Gymnopilus or somthing different.

I only find Pholiota rarely and never found a gymnopilus species, so im not really sure what they are.

Habitat: Growing on log, singular, some clustered in group of 3
Stem: fragile, hollow
Cap: very faint fuzzy texture similar to what i see in pictures of gyms.
bruising/ color change: None noted

Spore print: SOON! Ill update this as soon as i can

Found this little guy too, Never seen a wild turtle in these parts, they are fairly rare.

Thanks Hash, I really dont think it is a Hygrocybe although maybe a Hypholoma species ive never heard of is possible.

And thanks blue that seems very possible also.

I think its a pretty interesting find. I hope spore print will help us figure out what it actually is.

If spore print turns out white, Tricholomopsis decora looks very promising.

Try checking woodchip heaps, ground up stumps, logging areas where they have selectively harvested trees, etc. I find them almost exclusively in open areas with a lot of light. I have yet to find a classic gym cluster deep in the woods on some rotting old log. I will find it someday too... But if you want my advice, hit the woodchip piles.
