Does the direction of the light matter when growing mushrooms?
    #18799634 - 09/04/13 03:07 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

For instance I was thinking of hanging a fixture above my mono, but it would be kind of awkward to do so as I'd just have a cord running up to the ceiling and down into the wall socket. Could I just set a regular lamp on the table next to it to accomplish the same thing or would the light coming in from the side be less than ideal?

Light direction just determines which way the little buggers grow. SO it will be fine, but your mushrooms will grow out to the side.

It will be fine. I think Ive read a post from RR before that said light to the side is actually better than right above but either will work.

A lot of us do this. They will still grow straight up opposite gravity. Although some of your caps will turn towards the light when they open

Total BS...

Mushrooms will grow opposite of gravity, even in complete darkness.

Light does not tell them which way to grow, gravity does.

They will however sometimes orient their caps towards the light, as they derive energy from it.

My lights are on the sides of my tubs, and yet I have never had fruits grow sideways....

i thin rr wrote it somewhere (something about making interesting shape of antlers when moving the source of light) and i recently grew reishi and it did grow in the direction of light.

i will search around a little for more solid proof.

I always do light on the side, all usually grow directly upwards.

You can to this same thing with some cubes....

If you see them bending towards the light, move the light....

This keeps getting repeated and it's just plain wrong.
I have seen pins grow upside down and I've seen mushies creep along the substrate due to extreme side lighting.

Pins growing upside down do not count....the bottom of them was still growing opposite of gravity.....up....  :smirk:

And yea, they will sometimes grow towards the light, but that does not mean that the light is telling them which way to grow, gravity does that..find me just one TC who disagrees.

They were growing towards the energy source, mainly because there was insufficient light hitting the surface of the substrate.

Light has no relationship to telling the mushrooms 'which way to grow'.  Mushrooms grown in total darkness are skinny and weak, but they grow straight up.  Gravity tells them which way to grow.

Mushrooms grow towards light because they are deriving energy from the light.  I won't go into detail because I've already typed it thousands of times.  A quick search on this forum will show anyone interested all they need to know about light.

What mushrooms do not need is light to 'tell' them which way to grow.  They'll grow opposite gravity in total darkness.

Here's a picture of penis envy which was turning toward a light source near the floor for exactly this kind of demonstration.

TCs may be saying such, but personal experience says otherwise.
How about a sideways pin, I've seen that too!
While you will just have to wait for the timelapse footage (I would say soon™ but pft I have no idea when).
I've been using blue augmented light to play bonsai shroom.  While not every shroom plays along, most do.
I think there's some general confusion as it also depends on stage of growth, as well as serious directionality (Eg. black covering to reduce ambient spill).

And who are you that makes your experience matter?

Were your experiments done with isolates under controlled conditions?

So have I...but that has little to do with where the light is....my experience and understanding of mycelial growth says otherwise...they still grew straight up....

:ahahaha:
Yeahhh... I'm not playing that game.

To the OP, if you are looking for upwards growing shrooms follow Notahacker's setup and make sure the walls are white/reflective.  This will hide the direction of your light and make it appear to the shrooms it's coming from all directions.

It's not like you can't experiment with this yourself (instead of repeating what others have said), just make sure to cover the walls with black plastic/paper so there is a clear light direction.

  The light is hitting the substrate directly, at an angle.

The lights are pointed directly at the tubs with reflective domes, and are not pointed at the walls in the least bit.

The walls are flat light purple, which has sort of a matte finish, so the paint is not reflective in the least bit, nor is it white...

And I used to have black garbage bags on my walls...guess what...they still grew straight up...

Nice try tho....

Yes I should have just stuck to saying ambient reflective, lilac walls are fine enough, it's all about light ratio not total amount.
I do find it interesting you didn't see final stage bending when the walls were covered.  While it still might be too low of a ratio this does give something to experiment with...

Double posting to be more clear, I'm not talking about these things as if I remembered a friend once told me while in a haze mushrooms grow towards lights.  I actually have images of this, but when I actually get a chance to put them together into something interesting is the issue.

For example, here are couple crappy photos.
Image 1: Is a top down view parallel to the substrate, the largest is almost touching the substrate moving towards the hard side lights.
Image 2: Is a side view of a fuzzy butted side pin which formed and grew downward before being exposed to heavy light and turned upward.  His starting to turn upward friend sadly never got to reach his full girth and potential.  Astute viewers will notice mushy goes below the bottom of the substrate.  They appear to have enough 'strength' to lift a rather large substrate and one of my eventual goals is to get a timelapse of this mushroom lift.
(Lighting is from camera flash, not actual positions of grow lights).
