What do you feel the perfect soak time is?
    #18799920 - 09/04/13 04:24 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I hear between 4-24 hours

Now is 4 sufficient and you can just leave them in water for that long if you need

or 24 hours is ideal  but you can do it sooner if you must?

I do 12-18 hours.  I have problem with my water and fermentation after 18 hours. I've never done 4, the least I did was 10 and that was with rye.

Usually ends up ~14
after 24 it gets a little iffy
under 8 normally doesn't get enough moisture.

It has to pass the fingernail test

I soak my WBS for 24 hours in hot tap water, then strain and load my jars...no simmer/boil.

I know you live close to me but I've been to a majority of home depots between the wisconsin border and o'hare and cannot find this brand.

I use petco or ace hardware brand (i think they are actually made by the same company and just bagged different) because its what I can find.  Whenever I don't simmer that shit turns into a brick from the starch.

:whatshesaid:

My only difference is that my tap water is tragic, and treated with lots of softener.  I use spring water I get down at the spring house.  24 hours soak is all I have ever needed.

Rinse it better.....

The shit i get is dirty as fuck, and it takes 15-20 minutes of just filling up a pot and dumping out the water, stirring them so they scrub each other, to get the water to run clear.

I soak anywhere from 20-30 qts of WBS at a time, in big pots.....

I got starchy bricks when I simmered for too long, and exploded most of the grains...

After PCing I could not shake, it was just one big clump....

If the grains are not clean they are going to clump no matter what tho most of the time.

It is very weird that it would clump from the starches if not simmered or boiled...kinda makes no sense to me.

I could be wrong, but I thought the simmer pulls some of the excess starch out.  But what you're saying makes sense as I give them a warm rinse after the simmer.

I am talking about rinsing them before the soak.

I rinse them in hot water until the water runs clean before the soak them in hot water.

You should never rinse them after the simmer/boil.

That would rinse the gypsum off, if gypsum was used, and it would lower the temperature of the grains.

The whole purpose of simmering them is to get them hot enough to steam dry in the strainer, the last thing you would want to do is lower their temperature prematurely.

I recently switched to a "finch mix" which uses much smaller grains.  The problem area is that one of the nuts in the mix (I think it is shelled sunflower) clumps and gets a nasty slime from nothing more than the soak.  I found that if I swirl the water, and dump, I am able to decant most of that rubbish.  (repeat as necessary) It may not be starches that I am seeing, but possibly oils/fat.  I really have no idea, but I simmered the snotty mess, strained it out and used it for agar.

It made no sense to me either, because I thought the same.  I don't know/care what it is/was, but I do know how to get it out of my mix.  One part goes to jars, the other the trash heap.
