The Mindbox - A cardboard Isolation Chamber!

The Mindbox A cardboard Isolation Chamber! After seeing those impressive isolation chambers and hearing about their fascinating effects, I came up with a simple and cheap design of my own. The idea is simple: to isolate your head from any external interference without actually strapping anything to it. So no masks, no shirts, no ping pong balls on your eyes! The design is easy: you take a cardboard box, cut an opening for your head and make some holes for ventilation on the back. Then you perfect it to your liking, lay back, put some earplugs in and put it on your head... and there you go! Instant isolation chamber! Be careful with those isolation holes: if you cut them too big, you will end up letting too much light through. You can try attach little roofs above them to block the light or do what I did and attach tubes to the holes and just point them to the sides. It works like a charm and it gets really interesting while tripping! Very personal, heavy mindtrips which rely purely on your imagination. Don't stay in too long, it may drive you crazy after a while! But if you feel you're up for an adventure through your mind, the Mindbox will give you a blast! Feel free to post any improvements, experiences or your very own design! Happy tripping!

That's ridiculous.
Blindfold and ear plugs will do the job. It's dark and you can breathe fresh air.

When I lived at home my room was upstairs and my parents were too lazy to ever come up, so my friends and I did whatever we wanted. Next to my room was a small linen closet. I took out the bottom shelf and it as the perfect size so that one of us could sit in it with the door closed. We called it "The room of life".
During the week I would splice together some cool music, sound effects and other audio on my reel-to-reel tape deck and on the weekend we'd trip and take turns going into the Room of life with headphones, with a long extension cord going to my room, plugged into the stereo. While in the Room of life we'd take a lighter and small bowl packed with weed, or we'd take the bottle of RUSH. It was fun to spin the flint on the lighter to see the flashes of light.
Taped to the inside door of the Room of life was this Bob Dylan picture - that's what I'd see when I flashed my lighter.

My poor man's sensory deprivation approach:
 Wax ear plugs
Contoured sleep mask that allows you to open you eyes and blink - let's in no light when adjusted properly. My girlfriend calls it my face bra.
Combined they do a good job of focusing my mind and potentiating the trip. All from Amazon.

this os funny, but your literally missing the most important part (being buoyant in a brine solution and eliminating "all" external stimuli)
if you have a huge bathtub you can mix copious amounts of epsom salt in body temp water( that will quickly cool) and float with the lights off and No sound other than your heart beat and blood pumping.

Masks don't work for me because I cannot open my eyes and gaze into darkness. The contoured mask would work though, but try finding one, it certainly is cheaper cutting that box up. @bishlap This is a poor man's solution, literally costing you 0 bucks if you have a cartboard box around and really who doesn't? IF, and that's a big IF, you have a huge bathtub AND you BUY copious amounts of epsom salt, AND you can make your bathroom 100% lightproof, then yes, you could do that. But I don't have a huge tub, nor can it be made fully lightproof.
Whatever works for you guys, if you have a contoured mask you can do that but I prefer not to have anything against my face, it starts itching at times and works too distracting for me.

Put the box over your head and GO WILD MAN
Oh and I forgot to mention: a possible improvement I did was paint the box black inside just to make sure no light would be reflected. It's optional but I had paint laying around so I just did. Does give a nasty smell, make sure to leave it outside for the smell to vanish if you do!

I wholeheartedly agree but sadly I cannot afford one even if I did have the space to put it here. On a sidenote, an acoustic isolation chamber seems to be crazy as well, albeit a bit scarier. You end up hearing your own heartbeat and all that nasty internal stuff that goes inside your body. Heard it's quite difficult to stay inside of one for longer than an hour...

I was talking about this head in a box idea to my friend and we thought of putting on a light show while we took turns w our heads in the box, I'm thinking that we may be able to see a little bit of light through the cracks so maybe it'll look like shooting stars

hey op, line the box with a cloth material, it will help absorb sound waves. Treat sound like you would imagine dropping a pebble into still water, it works very similar.
Whoever mentioned a "real" isolation chamber
I can post up some detailed plans to make your own if anyone is interested (no, it is not a 30 min process nor cheap). Took forever to find them, they are the ones on flebay for $10...
oh, hanging some blankets on the wall/ceiling of a closet might be more practical... and might not look as weird if someone walks in

As you remove more of your senses, meditation becomes easier. It's like turning off your vision AND your hearing. The real deprivation chambers help to also eliminate the sense of touch by suspending you in a dense liquid. Like being in a calm infinite ocean

I understand how sensory deprivation tanks work. My point is that turning off the light would work just as well as a box on your head for removing visual stimulus. If there was ambient light coming in from the window, you could always cut the box and tape it to the wall.

Because I have several dozen electrical devices in my room that all emit light with their LEDs, taping these down is a big pain. Also, the way my room is build, I cannot lightproof it completely.

I can try but I really don't mind having earplugs in to isolate the sound, which is what I'm doing now.

Please do! But if you're talking about a real isolation chamber, I would like to bring up the space argument once more. I just can't put a tub in my room. I mean, a box you can store away, but you can't just store away the tub, now _that_ would look weird if someone entered my room on a normal occasion!
Quote:

I don't know what would be weirder really; finding someone with a box on his head or someone in a closet. Imagine opening that closet and finding someone sitting there, it would scare the hell out of me

It's not my design at all. Just a pdf of a "real" tank, pumps and all.
You can buy them for about 8-10k, but building it would cost about 500-800 after buying a pallet of epsom salt. You don't have to change it very often though, that is what the pump and filter does (it doesn't run while you are in it). I think it even has transducers for sound beneath the water level, so you could play some music/sound to help you relax, or trip the f out
silence is best
lets you really get to experience what is, w/out the distractions.
Let me get it hosted somewhere, not sure about copy write stuff, probably why it was so difficult to locate...

That's awesome! I love floating. I was addicted after one session. Great thing is I learned that at my float center here in Boulder if I make my appointments the last one of the day the employee will give me an extra 30min so he can float himself at the same time. This is an article on tanks if anyone is interested. Isolation Tanks and their benefits.
I'd be interested in a homemade tank. That would be cool. I always thought about putting one in my garage. I just need to get settled down more. I wouldn't want to move that sucker after it was all set up and filled with salt. Salt is expensive when you have to buy that much.

It is expensive, but if you shower before hand and run the filter afterwards, it should last 6-12 months. It's not like much can grow in that stuff lol
One thing you will want to mindful of is the temp in your garage. I believe the perfect temp is about 95F? I am going through some of my hard drives this week and will post the pdf, like I said, it looks exactly like the one joe rogan did an interview near (his)
and yeah, search float tanks and the area you are near, I bet there is one close
