Blue-stemmed Russula?
    #18798757 - 09/04/13 11:07 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Found this shroom with a white cap and gills but a blue stem near the house, which I've never seen here before. Colorado Front Range, 9,100 feet, mixed aspen and conifers though this one was growing in an unshaded grassy area. About 3 inches in diameter and 2 inches high. White spore print, no discernible smell.

Lactarius paradoxus is a possibility. Break a piece of cap and see if it 'bleeds'.

No bleeding but broken parts show the same blue color at the base of the gills, which have turned brown since picking.

I might add that stem is hollow. Closest picture I could find would be lactarius barrowsii.

There's a chance it won't bleed if it's too old, but that is a Lactarius sp, green bruises are common in some species specially as they get older.

Lactarius is from the same family as Russula though, the Russulaceae :tongue2:
