Obviously, but just the fact that this is up for debate when the approval rating for military intervention in Syria is at 9% is preposterous.

Maybe the our representatives should actually represent the public. That is their job, after all.

It is the people's job to elect representatives that actually represent their values. There is no law saying that a representative must vote the way their constituents want them to. Their only oath is to uphold the constitution.
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. [So help me God.]"
Sorry to burst your bubble. Maybe if people cared less about who was marrying who, and who was aborting what, and started worrying about the kind of issues that actually affect the future of our nation, we wouldn't be in such a position.

I know. I just don't give a fuck which asshole celebrity is doing what to whomever. Most people who care about that shit are ignorant in the extreme, IMHO. I weep for the future of humanity.

No one stated that these politicians are legally bound to represent their constituency. I don't know of any job whereas one works at Burger King and is legally obligated to flip burgers. No, the duties are straight foreword and if one does not perform them as their bosses desire, they are to be fired.
Yes, they are paid to represent the voters. Hence the term "representative". If their only duty were to uphold the Constitution ( which most have failed at miserably) then what is the purpose of campaigning. When one flat out lies, intends to deceive and mislead the voting public then that would constitute a dereliction of duty. Is there a law that prohibits putting your cigar in a fat slut interns vagina? Then why the uproar?
Is there a law that specifically states you can not get drunk, crash your car in the Chappaquiddick and watch a woman die as your drunk fat ass swims to safety, to American camelot?
Its about a blatant disregard for what the people you are paid to represent want, about a lack of responsibility, lack of credibility, trust, honesty, and integrity. The problem now is that the voters EXPECT their reps to lie to them, to deceive them, to argue semantics over "mispeaking while giving talking points" vs. lying when questioned. The bar has been set so low that politicians flat out lie, get busted, then claim yeah so what, we did it for your security, or your safety, or your benefit, etc. All fucking liars.

Dammit I just went through the entire constitution again, and you are indeed right, they are bound to the constitution, which doesn't say anything about our representatives actually representing the beliefs of those who elected them This reminds me of the court decisions in New York that decided that their police aren't bound to protect citizens.
But also as stated above by Therian;

Yeah, their oath binds them to uphold the constitution, and they don't do that either. So not only are they failing at doing their intended job, but they are failing at doing what is legally required of them.
