Put it into your fridge for a few hours to see if it
bruises more.

Looks like a gym.

Never mind. I believe it now. Should not answer ID requests with my iPhone.

The gill attachment looks wrong for gyms too.

Ha! I knew I should not have believed the "brown" spore print.

It's a gym.

Dammit. Your find is a pholiota like maynard said. The gill color is not
right for a gym either.
And the spore print is actually just brown. Let's see a pic of the
print.

I looked at pics and specs. of pholiota and it has nothing in common except size and print color. But has all the traits of Gymnopilus luteus. and the pics look 110% idenical. It will be a couple days before I can post the print. I dont have my camera here with me, damit!! I will update with print pic thursday or friday??? best I can do

They do not look 110% identical.
I can tell you are excited but without more conclusive info I would have to lean
towards pholiota.

Well they have always looked like gyms to me. I just don't know now.

A print would really help. Take a pic of a print.

You are right though it really does look like a G. luteus

I do not have my field guide with me...but it does appear that the gills on your specimen are free or (unattached) to the stalk whereas the Gyms are attached. Like I said...I don't have guide but they do not look like the same mushroom sp. using that observation.

Could you take a close up picture of how the gills attach to the stem?
