Devil’s breath’ could be world’s scariest drug

The drug scopolamine comes from the seeds of a family of plants that includes angel’s trumpets.
“I can give you a gun and tell you to go kill someone and you will do it,” said Dr. Camilo Uribe, who heads the toxicology unit at San Jose University Hospital and is a leading expert on the drug.
By: John Otis Globalpost, Published on Mon Sep 02 2013 The drug scopolamine is also known as “the devil’s breath” or“burundanga.” The late salsa diva Celia Cruz sang about it. In a recent documentary, Vice called it “the world’s scariest drug.”
That’s because scopolamine provides a potent weapon to Colombian criminals. The drug puts people into a zombie-like state in which they lose both their memory and free will and can be convinced to empty their bank accounts or hand over the keys to their apartments and cars.
“They go out to party and then wake up two or three days later on a park bench,” said Maria Fernanda Villota, a nurse at San Jose University Hospital in Bogota, which receives several scopolamine victims every week. “They arrive here without their belongings or their money.”
Tasteless and odourless, the drug is often slipped into the drinks of unsuspecting bar patrons. Last year, Colombian police reported nearly 1,200 cases of people victimized by criminals using scopolamine and other so-called zombie drugs. The victims range from high-profile politicians to U.S. Embassy employees to average Colombians.
Scopolamine comes from the seeds of a family of plants that includes angel’s trumpets and corkwood. They grow in many areas and can be found in the Botanical Garden in Bogota.
The drug has a few legitimate medical uses, such as treatment for motion sickness and for the tremors of Parkinson’s disease. But it’s best known for its darker properties.
Scopolamine blocks neurotransmitters that carry information to the part of the brain that stores short-term memory, said Dr. Camilo Uribe, who heads the toxicology unit at San Jose University Hospital and is a leading expert on the drug. In other words, what happens to people under the effect of scopolamine is simply not recorded by the brain.
At the same time, the drug makes people more open to suggestions.
Nazi “Angel of Death” Josef Mengele used scopolamine in interrogations as a kind of truth serum. The CIA administered doses of the drug during its controversial behavioural-engineering experiments in the 1960s, according to John D. Marks’ book, The Search for the ‘Manchurian Candidate.’
Since the 1970s, Colombian criminals have used scopolamine in order to rape women, empty out houses and apartments, and even abduct children. Last year, kidnappers used the drug on the parents of a 7-year-old girl in northern Antioquia department then took the child. She was rescued two months later.
But because victims remember almost nothing about these encounters it’s often impossible for them to provide police with descriptions of the perpetrators.
It’s widely believed that many of these crimes go unreported because they involve married men frequenting bars and bordellos who are too embarrassed to own up to what happened.
“Women are often the culprits,” said Augusto Perez of Nuevos Rumbos, a Bogota organization that focuses on drug abuse.
One infamous case involved three young Bogota women who preyed on men by smearing the drug on their breasts and luring their victims to take a lick. “Losing all willpower, the men readily gave up their bank access codes. The breast-temptress thieves then held them hostage for days while draining their accounts,” Reuters reported.
Victims have even been convinced to carry out crimes while under the effects of the drug.
“I can give you a gun and tell you to go kill someone and you will do it,” Uribe said.
A downside to scopolamine, from the point of view of the bad guys, is that victims can sometimes become agitated and aggressive and turn on their perpetrators.
“We’ve had cases in the emergency room in which we would have to treat both the victim who was intoxicated with the drug and the criminal whom he had beaten up,” Uribe said.

nothing new here
NEVER taken this shit. Obviously scopolomine in Belladonna flower is what actually makes you trip. To me it might as well be a toxin that causes delirium, almost the same thing as if someone ingested too much nicotine and just hallucinated. I've heard stories of people taking too much of this and overdosing
What's worst I've heard stories from people I've known first hand saying they were surprised they didn't kill them self while tripping considering they didn't know what was real or wasn't real. Picking up things they thought were food or cigarettes, trying to drive
Nothing new about this

I've known about it for quite a while. Almost did mandrake one time but I wimped out.its funny how they spin it though, never heard of the stuff they make people do. I like the part about the victim beating up the perpetrator though.

Yawn. The natural deliriants are absurdly sensationalized in South America.

The savage south americans created the most horrifying drugs, plain and simple, forget that the government made BZ in an effort to make soldiers the perfect killing machine. Move along, nothing to see here, never happened.
Seriously i'm as scared as the next person of scopolamine, but when the government made BZ, and scrapped it who knows what they've come up with since then? But yeah scopolamine, has to be the most terrifying substance on the planet.

santa cruz, california has these growing here and there. absolutely a beautiful aroma comes from these when in flower, a umbrella of scent. some of the traveler kids eye seen munch a bit of flower while being fungi's already, nothing too far out, and then.. there is Mark. sitting on the top floor, as high as you can get, seven stories, downtown santa cruz, and i would take you higher, Mark shared his story of his munching of the Angel's flower. with the aid of some Ketamine, the wonderfully told animated story toward an Acme fueled adventure. all begins when Mark decides to munch on a flower. with little knowledge of how to use, what to expect, he had consumed two flowers over his venture. the next week, can only be told in the best of light by him, himself. a group of kids thought he was a real hip body and offered a very nice bicycle for his use. very impressed with the rolls, rides around town coming to the boardwalk and wharf area beachside. a call for 'a contestant' came through the air waves, saying, 'we only need one more for the games to begin'. excitedly, Mark began to ride towards the end of the wharf where the sounds seemed to originate. 'looks like we found the contestant'. puzzled by the announcement. he second thought the idea. just then, 'oh, looks like he changed his mind. we need another to begin.' he began to ride towards the calling, to hear, 'looks like he is coming after all.' this said to have happened before Mark got to weirded out and left, with much disappointment to both parties. somewhere along the week, Mark was hanging around the board walk again starring up, watching the pigeons fly a beautiful flight in the sky, his personal show. with the walking stick acquired somewhere along the way, he points the stick up into the air and began to guide the birds on their flight. a group of people came to watch the spectacle, and began to laugh, which only fueled the fire for Mark to create a more impressive show. throwing his ar and stick from side to side, round and round, the birds did follow giving Mark the last laugh. much more Mark recalled as we sat visually peace.ing together the words that brought much leg slapping burst of laughs. the laughter not necessarily with him, for his faced showed more concern in a cold truth to the events. being one who has read a bit of others accounts, couldn't help but think all much the week hallucinations filled the calendar. aside from the mental phenomena, Mark stated he was very sick, hadn't eaten much, thought was going to die, and had bad vision for the Angel's flowers. luckily, he made it through and was there to share the story eye will never forget. cheers to you Mark peaceLOVE

I have drank datura tea a few times and seen people on it. I don't think they would do anything you say, because they are in a totally alternate reality. They usually play with things that don't exist, pet dogs that are not there or think they are were they are not. I kept my doses small, but people can really be lost doing to much.
It's not a manchurian canidate substance at all.
