PLEASE HELP! Colonization issues
    #18795914 - 09/03/13 07:16 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

PLEASE HELP! This all stems from a post I made earlier. As I started typing it became WAY to big for a reply post. I thought my story needed a new post.

If any of you have read my other posts you can see a good history of this grow as it is my first one and get yourselves some details but as we know replies start to die after a while.

I have been advised on this forum that my slow colonization and jars not being 100% after four weeks could be a bacterial (no color) contam issue. I decided to open the two tubs and take a sniff to verify. Smelled like feet which we know is a dead give away BUT my water is not the best and I live in a basement so I'm blaming those conditions (read on).

I then popped two jars tops and both smelled like yummy delicious dirt!! I'm blaming the smell on the tubs/water and not contam in the jars as they smelled JUST FINE! Again, as we know if there is a contam issue little dudes will not grow...(keep reading).

I've decided the issue could be from all the condensation making things too wet.  Over wet substrate = bad news. I have moved everything to a dresser drawer and will monitor them over 48 hours and maybe dry them out a little.

Here's the bigger issue. Two jars for sure have little dudes growing in them so I doubt very much its contam because again, as we know, a contam jar will not produce little dudes.

I'm thinking the jars were just way to large and I did not have a good spores to jar ratio. Think about it, over sized jars using the same spore amount for a normal jar you would think they would run out of steam sooner or later.

What should I do with the two that are growing?!?!? Birth them even though they are not 100% or just let them sit there? On the thought that the jars are too big and maybe they just won't fill 100% I'm considering birthing everything even though I know I will not get full results. Hell, something is better than nothing. I'm not tossing the jars after all this time and maybe 75% colonization.

I don't have my fruiting chamber set up yet and I'm at a loss on if I should really do the birthing now, please help.

Contaminated jars will produce little dudes. In nature all manure is contaminated with all manner of things. That is why you see 1-4 shrooms on a cow pattie and not a killer pinset flush. You can birth them ISOLATED from your normal grow room and never visit your good grow room after visiting the bad one without showering and a change of cloths. You do not want to cross contaminate or introduce contaminate spores to your normal grow room. Lysol the bad room before and after any attention you give them, Harvest and toss if they mature. If you can spare the loss then toss. If not, follow the above advice. Make sure you bleach the FC well before bringing it back to your main grow room.

It may also help to cut ALL uncolonized parts and toss that before birthing. Make another FC for the possible bad ones.

Sorry about the multiple posts but if your jars did not have a method of gas exchange then stalling is quite common. If you have opened them already and they are not 100% your only options is to cut and birth or toss.

Tanks divine! I think I'll let them chill for 24 houra and see what happens. Inside rhose tubs FGE was so minimal. Since one has a significantly growing little dude I'll consider birthing it tomorrow and update you. I can afford to toss everything, I just really don't want to lol.

Check out the self healing injection port lid teks or polyfil lid teks if you are doing grains. This will give them all the air they need. If you are doing BRF cakes with a dry verm layer do not cover the holes back up. If you are paranoid you can cover them with micropore (gentle paper medical) tape although it is more for placebo then effect.

Okay so....there were two jars growing inside the jars themselves. I birthed them and even though they were about 70% colonized they seem to be producing and growing just fine! Woo hoo!

don't sound too good to be honest ..

I mean I read ya post before and the jar size is not really a factor as they were tall 1/2 pints not wide which is still the same volume dude and I have seen guys do chinese container BRF cakes which are way larger than yours.. colonized fine just more noc up points which is faster  ...wider 1/2 pints are just recommended

if there is no contamination to be seen then it has to be ya substrate or GE,

substrate ratio is either wrong as in too much water which will create stingy mycelium growth which is deffs seen in your jars or not enough nutrients for the mycelium to fully colonize and there for has pined.

Gas exchange and they may have stalled

contaminate cakes will still pin and fruit also so its really hard to say

start again new mixture ratio 2:1:1 [MIX WELL]mix verm and flour dry then add water, lightly pack
(I had a jar not colonize fully coz I packed it way too tight)
dry verm layer on top Inoculate them up do not tilt any jar while colonizing as seen in old post
Then just leave them alone and at room temp dude
80 to 82 is Crazy it works just more room for error as your finding out I guess ... room temp is as good if not beta ...

IF there not 100% or close at 4 weeks its JUST NOT 100% RIGHT is it

Good news.! It seems like everything is going just fine the cakes are pinning and I'm even getting some guys growing! The only thing now is that some really bright white fluff is starting to grow. It looks just like mycilium so I'm not too concerned I can post a pic if anybody wants to throw in their two cents
