A chicken, but which?
    #18795884 - 09/03/13 07:10 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

A friend has this growing next to his house.

It hasn't rained here in months, high desert ish country, hot, California.

I have found a similar chicken myself but it was much more brain-like in form, subsequently ID'd as laetiporus gilbertsonii.  This one might be l. conifericola.

I'm wishing this one wasn't that.  I'm wishing it was good to eat.

Can you edibles experts weigh in?

Thank you!

I'm sorry not to know the tree; a friend snapped this on his cell phone and sent it to me earlier today.  It could be an oak tree as firs aren't around much at that elevation (flatland) so much as oak.  Thanks again!

That sho' looks more like pine bark than oak...

My reading suggests that L. conifericola is culinarily equivalent to L. gilbertsonii: don't try too much the first time, but if you find that you're not sensitive you can eat the rest later. (Possible exceptions: if it's found growing on yew or eucalyptus respectively.)
