Letting substrate sit after pasteurizing Q
    #18795738 - 09/03/13 06:39 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Im just sitting here waiting for my sub to finish up pasteurizing and i thought about the amount of time i should let my sub cool when finished. Obviously people tend to leave it a few hours or overnight to cool then use it.
HOWEVER considering the purpose of pasteurizing is to kill off the bad guys and leave the good so our mushies can feed on them, would it make sense to let my sub sit for an extended amount of time after pasteurizing and to allow those good micro organisms to recover and keep adding more nutes for my mushies, or would it make a differance and the sub has as much healthy organisms as it will ever have?

Im thinking about leaving the substrate in a still air environment and vented to reduce the chance of growing. Anyone have any experience on this topic?

I was in the same situation last night. Let it cool for ATLEAST 8 hours and then spawn asap. The more you wait, the better the chance that the bad micro-organisms have a chance to grab a foothold. The good micro-organisms+ good mycelium = no contams ( atleast not before first flush ) if everything was done right. People have had success waiting a few days to spawn it but I would spawn it as soon as it is room temp.

Ya I've always spawned as soon as my sub cooled but i wonder if this would ever make a noticeable differance....looks like i have a little project to conduct :crazy2: :nyan:

From what I've read after 1 days worth wait people usually get contams. Of coarse for this to be a good experiment one would have to get their spawn technique and pasteurization absolutely perfect.

if you have it covered while cooling then you will have less to worry about.  Plus a healthy spawn to substrate ratio allows the mycelium to get a strong foothold before contams.

Its been said 100% colonized substrate is contam resistant... i dunno how true it is but im sure its true to a point.

8 hours, really?  I did my first batch of hpoo today, 5 hours later I checked on the temp and it was room temp.
