Headphone jack not working...what can I do to listen to music?

I just got a Dell Vostro 320. Today, I tried connecting my stereo/speakers through the headphone jack to find out that the jack is not working. I tried plugging in headphones and still no sound. There is also a stereo line out port that does not work either.
The actual stereo with the speakers has a Left/Right output in the back. I have an adapter cable that plugs into the L/R jack and on the other end is a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. This used to work on my old laptops where I would just plug in the headphone jack and sound would play from the stereo speakers, but not this computer. I looked up troubles with headphone jack not working on Dell Vostro 320's and it seems to be a fairly common problem, but people have posted a bunch of solutions with no confirmations of them working, and many of them talk about messing with ALSA, and I have no idea what that is or how to go about messing with it.
What can I do to fix this? I just got this computer and I am going to be seriously disappointed if I can only listen to music through the ultra-crappy internal speakers.
I am not the most computer savvy person in the world. I just want to listen to some music.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Many headsets these days have USB as well as headphone jack connection, get a USB headset.
It may or may not be the jack itself. Do you have another device you can test on the same jack? computer speakers you can borrow to test maybe?
Have you installed the audio drivers for the Vostro? If you go to Control Panel > Sound .. what is currently set as the Default Playback device? (assuming this is windows..) What does it show there? Try all the different options, there should be settings saying like Headphones, or Speakers, try right clicking them and "Set as default device" and then try playing something, test each one.

Dell Support LOL.
I heard from a customer yesterday that a Dell Support guy told a customer he couldn't upgrade the power supply in his computer because it came with only a 300watt, and if he put a 750watt PSU in then it would fry all the components because it's too much power

I'd assume it's not broken as well and change the default playback (also may poke around in any other audio control panels, realtek's if installed) - but if it is broken, i'd just get an external audio interface/soundcard as opposed to a USB headset, because most USB headsets are cheap components....
OP: FWIW, I have a M-Audio Fast Track (pitched the Pro Tools that I'd be happy to trade for anything interesting http://www.djdeals.com/avidRECORDINGSTUDIO.htm?gclid=CM2PssiMs7kCFZFaMgod2RUAmw

Thanks for all the responses. Sorry I've taken 6 days to get back to this.
I do have the audio drivers installed.
I have dug through all the audio settings and files I could find, and I just can't seem to pinpoint the problem.
ComsicJoke, that thing looks sweet. Unfortunately, I have no idea how I would really utilize it or what I could trade for it, but thank you for the offer.
To be honest, I really don't want to call Dell's support.
I found some USB-to 3.5mm jack adapters online and they're not very expensive. Later on I would like to get some USB speakers or headphones. Seems like the easiest solution.
Again, I appreciate your responses.

Did it jack/sound work at sometime in the past? I have seen windows
update mess with sound drivers ( and others, too). Look at the date
the current driver was installed, if it is new, try rolling the driver
back to an earlier version ans see if that works.

It hasn't worked since I got the computer. It came from a liquidation sale so the hard drive was wiped clean, a new Windows 7 was loaded and the drivers were loaded and installed. I looked up the drivers online, and the only thing I can find is a one from 2009, and it's the same I have loaded on the computer.

You could try uninstalling and rebooting. Windows will often install a generic driver, perhaps it will work.
You could always reinstall your current driver if need be.
