cased equador on rye... what happened?
    #1879442 - 09/04/03 12:11 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

My chemistry teacher has had some success with brf/verm cakes, but she has not had the best luck with rye casings. She things several of her cases were too wet. One of her casings finally popped up some equadors, but a few days later they seem to have stopped growing, and they look like this. Please help!

they need more air exchange... and use some coir in your casings.

Definately more air exchange and higher humidity.

sweet... many thanks. she's been fanning them 3x a day and has an aquarium pump pumping air through a stone in water. should she cut some holes in the terrarium? also, the other casings that she tried did the following: the mycelium burst through looking great, then it sort of slowed down and little droplets of water started to build up on it. it wasn't overlay, exactly, as the mycelium wasn't matted or hard, but it still looked bad. is that too much water? this cake finally pinned only when she stopped watering it for about 2 days and, in fact, didn't exchange the air because she wasn't home. thankyouthankyou!!

Put 8 or 10 1/8" holes around the perrimeter about 7" from the bottom. Get a bubble wand to replace the stone and stop fanning.

Mist the walls once a day if the humidity drops below 85%.

You may want to double-up on the pump/wand.

3 times a day is not enough fanning in my experience, especially for casings.
