Dehydrator expansion pictorial

Here's a simple way to expand your dehydrator space by 3+ times for just a few dollars.
First, get a 5 gallon bucket. The bottom broke on mine, so I thought about uses to re purpose it.

Cut it into thirds

Then look at your dehydrator trays. They have little notches on the ring that will be in the way if you just add the newly cut plastic

Place your plastic on the ring, mark where the notches are, then cut out a little bit on each mark so that the plastic can fit snug into the ring

There will be about a 6in gap where the plastic can't reach. Take your 3rd piece of plastic and cut it to size, then cut out the notches so it fits in snug

And there you have it. It's not "beautiful" or anything, but it works. A $3 bucket beats buying 4 extra trays for $20. So if you have to dry 10+ oz at once, try this.
***This is not necessary for anyone who dries under half a lb at a time. I will only use these inserts if I have to harvest 3 or 4 tubs at a time and need to dry them all at once***

Great idea OP gonna have to remember this. The extra height doesn't change the air flow or efficiency of the unit? Do you have to adjust anything to compensate for the extra volume?

You shouldn't. Those dehydrators are expandable anyway. You can buy extra trays for them. I've seen people stack a bunch of trays on Nescos

Yeah, that model is expandable up to 12 trays.
Nice writeup, OP. Clever idea. Do you just use a hacksaw to cut the rings out of the bucket? What do you use to make the notches?

I used a jig saw at first. I used scissors to make a hole, then put the jigsaw blade in and cut it up. These buckers can be cut up with scissors. That's all I used for the notches.
