Two Questions on cakes.
    #18794128 - 09/03/13 12:18 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I'm wondering if any of you have used Pint Sized jars to make your cakes.  I'm assuming it would take a bit longer to colonize but I'm also wondering if the larger surface area/more substrate lead to any higher yield?

Also to counter-act the longer colonization time I'm wondering if anyone has experimented with additives to the BRF/verm mix to maybe make the myc more hungry and take over faster.  Would adding some organic bran/coir or gypsum help colonization in anyway?

The questions you just asked could have been answered by using the search function. People have used pint sized jars, but half pint is better because it has a larger surface area. A good additive is gypsum, but it's not going to make colonization times decrease.

Pint size jars are likely to stall out. Even the taller regular mouth 1/2 pints colonize really slowly and tend to stall out sometimes. Stick with the shorter wide mouth 1/2 pints.
