EZ felt question

Ok, I'm assuming not but i have to ask if EZ felt is any different than regular stiffened felt? I went to michael's today and the lady wasnt sure what EZ felt was but there was a sheet of stiffened felt for a dollar. I am guessing this will work as my GE filter on my jars but i just wanted to make sure before i rtv'ed them to my lids lol

EZ Felt is a brand name. The stiffened felt at michael's is the same thing.
I've used stiffened felt, but I double layered. I got it at hobby lobby.
I quit using it and bought SFD's.

alright thanks! did you have success with the felt? or none at all since you went to sfd? and why did you double layer just out of curiosity?

You should just grab some SFDs online. They'll last you a long time and they work great

Stiffened felt is pretty thin, so I doubled it to be extra cautious.
I ran about 100 jars without seeing contamination in the jars.
I switched to SFD's because I noticed the felt was breaking down after a couple of PC runs. It could have just been the brand I was using.
I had some extra money, so I upgraded. SFD's are made for this stuff, so I always feel confident even after multiple uses.

i would do sfds if i had any money at all right now lol and idk i prefer to just goto the store and buy stuff instead of ordering online hmmm does anyone have any advice on how to keep the felt from breaking down? i guess i could just scrape the rtv off and reapply every so often if needed but could be a PITA lol

but thats goos you did well with felt im coming from using micropore which has recently gave me nothing but contams ( although i think it may well have been a dirty syringe) so im just looking for cheap alternatives to get my shit down before i get all the higher end stuff

I have never RTV'd felt. I always just cut it to the size of my grain jar lids.
But yes, it is very cheap to replace.

i was debating just cutting discs as well. When i inoculate with syringe wouldnt the hole created by the needle make it easier for potential contams to get in though?

I would think so.
You can also open the lid in an SAB or in front of a flowhood and drop your spores in.
Or, you could make a self-healing injection port (SHIP)
SHIPs vs opening the jar is a matter of preference.

i did make the SHIP with the RTV but when i poke the needle through it will still have to go through the felt which still leads to essentially an open hole in the lid. i would love to just make the discs it would be so much easier lol but i dont see how i could get around poking it with the syringe

If you made a proper ship, then the hole reseals.
Like I mentioned, you can just open the lid

like the jar with the disc would go SHIP-LID-FILTERDISC and the syringe would have to go through all three to get to the grains and in that leaving a hole in the disc right?

Make 2 holes in your lid. Use RTV to adhere filter over one hole. Fill the other hole with RTV.
Now you have a filtered hole AND a SHIP.
If you search "SHIP", you will easily find what I'm talking about because it is a very popular method.
I don't have much of a use for this set up though.
You are not being an asshole. We just weren't exactly on the same page; we were kind of talking about two different things at once.
