Dumpster diving
    #18793473 - 09/03/13 08:46 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I'd be interested to know if its something people in the US still do.

If so, are there laws against it? If yes, are the cops tolerant about that behaviour?

Where are the best spots to look for?

I dont regard myself as a hippie but i do dumpster dive where i live. I prefer to have a nearly unlimited supply of free consumable goods than having to pay for it. Especially if you consider that alot of it is still in perfectly good condition and was only put in the bin because of the aesthetics.

I dont want to argue about the conception of the people regarding the practice, i want to know if i could do it in the US and not get to pay or get in jail.

Btw, was this a trolling attempt Gumby? Or maybe that could be considered as some kind of answer?

Nope, not trolling. Also yes, you could get arrested for it because technically you are trespassing. They might be able to hit you with some kind of theft charge depending on the state/town laws.

But technically its "trash". They pay people to take it away from them, its absurd to charge me if im doing the same thing as what they pay a company to do. No?

I am all for dumpster diving!! people throw away good stuff all the time!! I've found a pair of 15" concert speakers in the trash! multiple tvs! clothes, porn, all kinds of good shit!!

Dumpster diving is legal in the United States except where prohibited by local regulation. According to a 1988 Supreme Court Ruling (California vs. Greenwood), when a person throws something out, that item is now the public domain. Here is some language from that ruling: “It is common knowledge that plastic garbage bags left on or at the side of a public street are readily accessible to animals, children, scavengers, snoops, and other members of the public.”

However, if a dumpster is against a building or inside a fenced enclosure marked “No Trespassing,” you could be questioned, ticketed or even arrested by the police. Other law-enforcement tactics to discourage dumpster diving includelink..

I think it would depend on where the dumpster is located.

But in general, the services I pay others to do (e.g. trash pickup) have no bearing on whether or not I allow you on my property.

Its considered trespassing in my city. There's a dude who is in the dumpsters 5 times a week and he makes a fucking mess and doesn't clean it up.

One day I came home to him going through my trash bag on the street, literally he had taken the bag out of the dumpster and was going through it. I knew it was mine because of the contents that were out of the bag, I was so pissed. I told him to knock it off and he went crazy on me yelling "what are you hiding in your trash that you're afraid of me finding?" He has a fucking attitude about being allowed to dumpster dive but in all reality my neighbors and I have had it with him.

He has supposively been told about 20 times to stop by the apt managers but he just goes out there earlier or later. I despise him because hes so rude about it.

Iv literally found so much shit in my local dumpster. So far in a matter of 6 months iv found half my furniture, nike shoes air force, a retro ipod dock, a ps2, and other random stuff. One day the whole dumpster looked like someone had just thrown away a whole stoners room. I found a nice ash tray with aloot of resin stuck to it, and a massive stem. didnt smoke it though lol.

ITS SO WORTH IT...

Never open a garbage bag under any circumstances, and don't make a mess.
