first grow, is this cobweb contam please? :(
    #18793441 - 09/03/13 08:28 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I recently became interested in the cultivation of mushrooms and after studying up, decided to give it a shot. i'm still a little nervous about posting what i'm doing on here, but nonetheless everyone has always been great on here and i'm looking for a little help. i spawned three healthy PE brf cakes to a prepasteurized manure i purchased online a week and a half prior. it has been colonizing in a tupperware container poked with 12 small GE holes and covered in 3M micropore tape. it has been just passed exactly six days, so i decided to remove the cover and peak. This is what I found...

I am nervous because the layer of mycelium on top appears to be hairy. Almost like a thin cobweb mold. It isn't thick at all and everything looks white to me. But it's my first grow, so I'm a total noob. Please help.

I will also say on the side, if it is contaminated, I still have three healthy 1/2 pint brf cakes in jars, three lcs (two in a jar and one in a syringe--made from a fully colonized brf cake), and two cakes which were birthed into a shotgun fc about 4 days ago (humidity has been kept at a constant 100% and temp between 68 F and 75 F.

Sorry about that last shpeel about my projects. I'm just so damn excited.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I thank you all kindly for your participation in this beautiful website.

It would look like grey troll hair and grows extremely fast.

Much faster than the mushroom mycellium.

Look at these pictures, zoom in on the grey hair. Does your tub look like that?

the hairs i am seeing on my substrate are white, not grey. and they are not really growing up out of the substrate, just connecting the different little granules together (still like a cobweb, but no strands have a free end--i think thats the best way to describe that. hopefully it makes sense).

so i suppose a good question to ask would be this: Does mycelium appear to be hairy as it grows on manure?

I didn't add this before--I would consider the top to be about 80% colonized. Just a little extra description in case you can't tell by the picture.

Agreed.  That should start pinning soon.  Give lots of fresh air at full colonization.
