when to pick?

I have my rice cakes starting to make their first mushrooms. My question is, Do I pick all of the mushrooms off the cake at once? or can I pick the ones that the veils have broken first? Also does it matter if I leave them in there after they have dropped their spores?

You can pick them all at once or as they mature but since you're dealing with cakes rather than a bunch of big tubs I'd harvest as they mature. Harvesting all at once just makes it easier when you're dealing with a bunch of tubs. I'd let a few start to sporulate so you can take some prints but i wouldn't let a bunch of the because it can inhibit future flushes and make a huge mess.

You can cut off the ones which have their veils broken with a sharp knife and let the rest mature and then pick off the rest.

the preferred time to pick is right before the veil breaks, and you can pick them as they mature

Do not let the spores drop in the fruiting chamber, you will have a huge mess! pick them when the veils are almost broken free. The more you let them grow past that point, the weaker they will be.

I don't think that's really true and if it is then its not a huge difference. because when the mushroom drops spores..those spores don't have any pysiliybin and psyilicib or however you spell them.

IIRC they don't "lose" potency. The potency will be at it highest point right before the veil breaks. The mushroom will keep growing but the amount of psilocybin will not, thus making a higher "weight to potency ratio" than if picked when the veil breaks.
Bigger fruit=less % psilocybin per gram.

Was this really necessary? You can't ask a ques on here that has not already been asked! This is a forum! If all anyone did was utsf it would be a very boring forum. If you don't want to respond you don't have to

I feel it was very necessary. I know some questions get repeated occasionally but this question is asked almost on a daily basis. If he would have typed "when to pick" in the search function he would have had WAY MORE than enough info to go off of.
People need to stop being completely lazy and just use the search function instead of hoping people will hold their hand the whole way through

Its not the dropping of spores that loses the psilocybin. The mushrooms contain the max potency when the veils are about to break, and after that they will grow larger but will not gain any more potency. So you have more weight, but more diluted potency. They pack the most punch just before the veil breaks.
Its like making kool-aid... you can add another gallon of water to the batch and you will have a lot more kook-aid, but it will be very weak.

Right? I mean come on lets use the search function that has a ton of deleted threads, pulls information from over a decade ago and has 100 different ideas of when to pick.
Great idea, lets turn into the growery where the most recent post is 3 weeks old.... That'll make this fucker hopping with great information and new ideas.

Have you used the search engine lately? I just searched "when to pick" came back with 10, 000 responses over 400 pages, the very first three are from this thread. The next posts are from 2003.
I have interacted with FF over a few threads and normally he is pretty thorough.
I proposed making an faq we can just copy and paste the link to for when we get these regular questions. This way we don't have to have a bunch of back and forth. Here is the link:

I think you can find almost as many threads where people are nagging about newcomers asking questions that have been answered thousands of times before.
