Eating from contamination
    #18784558 - 09/01/13 09:36 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Is it still possible to eat mushrooms safely if they came from blocks CovERED in contaminants?

What contaminant specifically? Very few of the mold inhabiting mushroom substrates are toxic. In nature, many species of mold and bacteria grow alongside mushrooms, and we eat them without problems.

I would be very careful about eating mushrooms from contaminated substrate.  Although most contaminants are probably harmless, I would be worried if the contaminant is Aspergillus.  Some species of Aspergillus mold contain carcinogenic toxins, and I'm not sure whether the oysters would absorb them as is, or metabolize them into something harmless.

Spores of some species of mold can be harmful, especially if breathed.  There is no excuse for a substrate to be CovERED in mold.

That said, every substrate in the wild is a combination of various fungi, bacteria, and the species of desired mushroom, all sharing the same real estate.

:aweohyou: I think I know what your getting at  :badshroom:

Seriously thanks though, but It does leave room for wonder :strokebeard: So your saying it MIGHT be ok to have a nibble if there is some black stuff in the corner, but if the substrate is covered in black stuff might wanna stay clear?
