found mushrooms in Western NC. To eat or not to eat? * 1
    #18792684 - 09/02/13 11:32 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I found these literally in the middle of a gravel road in Western NC up in the mountains. They were in a shaded bend in the middle of the forest service road so there could have possibly been horse dung or something present but it was mostly dead leaves and other organic "stufff."
I was just walking my dog at night and wasn't looking for them (my friend of a friend is about a day from birthing some pf tek B+) but i couldn't leave them because, to me, they look fairly similar to psilocybe caerulipes or some of the pann..s. Please forgive my ignorance as I am totally new to mycology.

As far as the gills go, again, i'm not familiar with terminology but they should be fairly clear in the pictures. Same with stem and cap. I'm working on a spore print. The gills don't seem to bruise but they could possibly just bruise a slightly darker tan color.

All information is greatly appreciated but i'm really just wanting to know if they could possibly be fun if eaten. Thanks!

Middle of a gravel road? That is weird.

They are not Psilocybe or any other psychoactive species.

They do however, look like an Armillaria sp. But growing out of the friggin gravel?

I'm a bit confused.

thanks alot for your quick reply. this really seems to be a great community here.. ive been visiting theses forums for a long time ive just never created an account.

and well yea i mean kinda.. we have alot of Game lands like National forest areas here and its all gated roads so i guess there's a good bit of leaves and stuff. actually now that i think about it the road was probably just dirt/ mud where they were. but yea it was totally random i was walking in the dark then around the corner the mother-load of whatever these are. like i said im not experienced and to me they kinda resembled what i remembered some of the actives around here looked like so i couldn't leave them. o well tho my (friends) brf cakes are going great and should be ready to go in the FC here in a couple days so guess ill have to wait lol

Yeah, they're honey mushrooms (Armillaria sp.). They were probably growing from buried wood.

ok thanks a lot to both of you. also, considering i have a good pound or two of them lol, am i correct in assuming they should be safe to eat? this is what wiki had to say...

Edible - Choice. Honey Fungus or pidpenky (Ukrainian: підпеньки) are considered in Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Germany and other European countries to be one of the best wild mushrooms and highly prized. They are commonly ranked above morels and chanterelles and only the cep / porcini is more highly prized. However pidpenky must be thoroughly cooked as they are mildly poisonous raw.

Yes indeed. Just cook them thoroughly. Look up some recipes. :sunny:

For the first time you should try a small piece that is well cooked. If you don't have any reaction after a few hours you can eat some more. Some people have an intolerance to honey mushrooms.
