Shaking off the rust: A Support Thread for musicians.
    #18790769 - 09/02/13 04:45 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

So I finally picked up my guitar again a few days ago after not playing for basically 4 years, and the first few attempts I made were so discouraging I cried like a little wussy girl.  I almost said "fuck it" and put my axe up for sale because of how bad it was.  My calluses were completely gone, my fingers were retarded and weak, and I couldn't remember a damn thing.  Two days later, however, through limiting myself to about 15 minutes of practice at a time, things are starting to come back.  It's frustratingly slow, but I'm working back up to my former guitar glory.  The keyboard I'm still afraid to touch.  I guess I'll just take it one day at a time, as the alcoholics say.

Anybody else ever have issues like this?  Feel like you have so much music in you that just won't come out because you can't discipline your hands to make it?  How do you deal?

I've never stopped playing for four years at a time, but maintain rigorous practise and ignore your discouragement.
It's not something you've really forgotten, you just need to get acclimated with your instrument again.

How long were you playing before? I've got about nineteen years on drums and seventeen on guitar in a few months.
I play other stuff, but I've only got a banjo, keys, bass, and a bari sax in the house. One day I'll buy more things.

You've got a good collection going, man.  I've been playing guitar for the better part of two decades, piano since I was five.  I just never applied myself to rigorous practice.  I only play when the spirit moves me to play.

I've actually sold a lot of my instruments over the past few years. It was damn near borderline hoarding for awhile.
at one point I had close to twenty guitars, and a bunch of half-finished broken guitars I was in the process of restoring.
Broken cymbals, old drums, all sorts of shit. My wife made me get rid of most of it :frown:
What I'd really like to get my hands on is a cello and a violin...

But yeah. I can sort of see what you mean about playing when you feel it. It's all I've really got the time for these days or I'd probably be living in my den with a guitar.
