Can you thaw frozen mushrooms and then pickle them?
    #18792130 - 09/02/13 09:24 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I sauteed some black staining polypore (rooster of the woods) in some canola oil with minced garlic and then froze them a week ago. I want to pickle some mushrooms and heard this one when older/mature (like mine) are tough to chew. I have bay leaves, apple cider vinegar & white, peppercorns and grow thyme in my yard. Whats your input? I read this thread here http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10584196#10584196 I think i could pull it off. I have brand new smaller sized canning jars.

Try it!  How tough are they out of the freezer?

Yes, I AM living vicariously through your collections...

I thought you would say something like that hehe. I have some thawing now. didnt taste any when I sauteed em. They seemed pretty soft. I drained the oil out best I could but dint lay em on paper towels like I should have. I thinks it cool you are always posting and helping me out! I will keep you posted on how it goes  TY

I just read somewhere that if you can pinch through 'em on collection they're not too tough to eat.

sounds like a good indicator to me  I thought they were only tough near the base. Id say I could pinch through the shelves just fine. I will see tomorrow and report back.

lol I was going to try them. smelled good thawed. Just got scared so I threw the little bag I got out away. Still got a bug bag of them. seemed tough when I tore a piece apart so I chucked em! I just found another black staining polypore earlier. Im hoping its not that and is a hen of the woods. I seen you checked the thread out so u prolly seen it by now.

Bah!  I would have at least nibbled on it if I was there, and applied max peer pressure.

Just a nibble...  You can spit it right out, y'know!

Grumble, grumble...

Man, I did that with twinberry awhile back.  Won't be doin' that again.

lol sounds interesting. I been reading about shroomers nibbling then spitting it right back out and being ok. I even seen that link with that dude who ate a whole destroying angel raw! Bet he died if that waas real lol. said he was going to convert it to pure ecstacy!
I did try the chicken of the woods and liked it (dint die) and I ate some of the giant puffball  I also have eaten other way more dangerous things in my life. Just thought got grocieries. I get skiddish at times then other times Im fearless it seems.
