ID request chanterelle, blue knight
    #18791329 - 09/02/13 06:36 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

This is my first time looking for wild edibles so i am a little nervious about eating them. I have All That the Rain promises and more as my identification guide.
first the chanterelles

Habitat: Found growing on the ground, there could have been some decaying wood in there.

Gills: Orange yellow ish a little lighter then cap

Stem: same color as gills

Cap: a little more orange then cap, wavy

Bruising: didn't notice any

Location: Northern CA
Also they kind of smelled sweet after i picked them, they don't so much after a couple hours

Then the blue knight

Habitat: Found growing on the ground, there could have been some decaying wood in there, same as chanterelle

Gills: No gills, white, spongey

Stem: white

Cap: Dark blue/black, kind of looks like velvet.

Bruising: didn't notice any

Location: Northern CA

The first one is a Cantharellus species and the second one is a cool polypore.

Sweet, i was pretty sure about the chanterelles, still not 100% about the other one. The common name my book gives is blue night, but albatrellus flettii is the more scientific name it gave. They are really firm and places online said they weren't great eating anyways.

Definitely A.flettii, not an incredible edible, but palatable for sure. Its one of the sweetest smelling mushrooms ive ever found, with the scent of fruitlooops
