Breaking up spawn jars with a spoon; Cause of contamination?

I've been racking my brain trying to figure out why I keep getting contaminations around the 1st flush.
I've always used a spoon to scoop out my grains from quart jars. I find once the myc is at 100%, just banging the jar against something 'soft/hard' just does not work, and I am afraid to bang the jars harder.
Anyways, I just had a thought that perhaps the spoon cuts open grains that might then be easily contaminated (with trich, in my case)since it will no longer be fully covered in myc.
Could this be possible/probable?

Possible, but my grains break right up and I just pour them from one jar to another, so there is never a need for a spoon.
Are you using WBS or rye?

^^What he said.
Are you leaving enough room in your jars for shaking? If you only fill them about 2/3 - 3/4 there is usually enough room that they'll just start falling apart without even having to hit them on something

Grains should never be hard to break up when you do the prep right. It's a sign of burst grains, or bacterial infection.

I use both Rye and WBS. Sometimes even a mix of both together.
I don't know. For me, often I find myself with a jar at 100% colonization, but it seems hard/dense like a rubber eraser. I shake the jar until my arms are numb, but even with plenty of room, the chunk just slides back and forth.
Next grow I will do my best to have then 2/3 full, and maybe shake em and spawn them the very moment they hit 100%.

Jars can really take a beating, if you whack it on a phone book it might take many whacks but eventually it should break up. Sometimes they break up easy, other times not so much, it's somewhat genetically determined. Even if you have to whack it 50 times in a row hard it's ok. You have to use some common sense of course with how much force to use.

There are other things that can make grains harder to break up too like bacteria or how you prepared them. If you're getting a fairly high contamination rate I doubt using the spoon is entirely to blame.

For the benefit of anyone cruising the search engine, I'll add that my jars are also quite hard to break up -- even at partial colonization when you'd normally shake. At full consolidation, I'm not sure that I've ever gotten WBS to break up by shaking. I always end up using a spoon or a knife to break things up.
Given the prevailing wisdom on the contam resistance of colonized spawn and pasteurized sub, and the fact that we don't go out of our way to sterilize tubs/trays, I can't really see how a spoon used to break up grain would be any more dangerous. In my case I dip it in an iodophor solution, same thing I do for the tub/tray after cleaning with soap and water.
I've had my share of contam issues, but then of course I've also not had contams, so it's hard to pinpoint what exactly is to blame. Barring a really controlled study on the topic, wouldn't we be inclined to think a contam came from somewhere else besides a spoon?

If you can describe your grain prep maybe I could find some room for improvement. Grains should never, ever be hard to break up. It's simple to get it right.

Yea do you use gypsum in your prep? Maybe add a little more?
I can usually smack my jars against my thigh and theyll break right up if I prep *just* right
