Pinning on edge of casing.
    #1878839 - 09/03/03 09:33 PM (14 years, 22 days ago)

I just recently stopped my first attempt at growing. I read about alot of busts of shroom growers, so instead of risking it, I have given up. It's too bad, it was coming along well. Well, one of my friend's acquaintences has picked up the hobby, and she asked my friend about her casing. She said that she has pins all around the outside of the casing, but no mycelium in the middle of the casing. She is doing the bulk neglect, and has the box in the closet, with a perforated trash bag over it. And no light going to it. She wants to know what she should do about the pinning, should she pick them and patch case? Or should she let them grow, and then pick them and patch case. The middle has a lil bit of mycelium poking through, but it looks as if it will take a week to catch up. What should she do?

Light is getting thru somehow ...if ya fiddle about thats what happens unless you are shure the light isnt somehow getting into the sides of your casing....

let the fruits mature, and pick/patch .
if it is only pinning at the edges, the casing layer is too wet .
or, it could be mean green :frown:
slow down, or stop spraying .fan,fan,fan,fan,fan.

What has most likely happened is that the bag was perforated too much, or enough that during primordia formation humidity was highest on the edges of the casing. This usually is the reason for pinning on the edges only (especially when they pull away from the sides during colonization). No mycelium in the middle leads me to believe humidity was far lower than required or the casing layer was not moist enough (or possibly over saturated).

Let the mushies grow. It does not matter if they are in the center or not.

I think she might have oversaturated it. She said she sprayed it down pretty good with a mister. She wanted to know how she can get the spraying right. She said it seems difficult to do. The casing might have been a lil bit too wet from the beginnig, when squeezed gently, water drops would fall out. She said after casing it, she let it sit for 6 days, she then misted it. She wants to know if a casing layer should be misted everyday, or not. And if she should replace the black peforated trash bag, with a clear peforated plastic sheet.

No. The casing should only be misted when dry, and care must be taken not to over-saturate. The black plastic can be replaced; it should help the mushrooms develop better but won't help pinning on the sides.
