Do contams usuallly show up early in substrate jars i.e. around the same time mycelium shows signs of growth or later on?

There's really no set time to when they start to show their face.

I think you mean spawn jars, and they show up any time they feel like it!
If they show up early, say within a week, that probably means they got in when you inoculated. Later than that tends to suggest they survived the pc process and woke up out of their heat induced coma.

Molds usually start growing around the time the mushroom mycelium would. However because some molds have the appearance of mushroom mycelium it's not uncommon for a contaminated jar to look normal only to discovered the mold later. That can happen anytime, even after full colonization in some cases.

Pretty much all the common molds could be mistaken for mushroom mycelium at some point when growing in a jar. People generally don't notice them until they change color but in some cases you can tell the difference before then.
