mushroom cultivation
    #18775309 - 08/29/13 09:45 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I'm a very inexperienced grower but since this is for advanced mycologists i figured an answer could be found here. Would it be possible to cross breed mushrooms similar to the cross strains of marijuana?

All sexually reproducing organisms work in the same way genetically.  Chromosomes exist in pairs (at least at some point in the life cycle) and each child receives exactly 50% of it's DNA from each parent. (notwithstanding chromosomal size differences)

There is still lots of confusion, misunderstandings, and downright disinformation on mushrooms relating to this issue for some reason.

The details of the lifecycle can vary, but the genetic results are the same in fungi, plants, and animals.

I'm with FF.  Note though that in a MS inoculation it is like a city of people working together.  Soo spore race is more ap-pro-pro

Goomba_trooper,

Yes you can fuse mycellium or mate individual spores under a microscope.  It can be done.  Mating individual spores under a microscope is tedious though.  I've never bothered.  Spores can be mixed from two strains and grown out.  Some mate with their own type, some cross mate, and some mycelium fuses.  You end up with mushrooms that look different than the two original strains.  You can take spores and grow them out a few times and you have a new strain that isn't like either of the parent strains.  It is best to dilute them heavily and test the dilution and do a test germination under a microscope a drop of spores and a drop of sugar water as well as 6 hours to watch the spores germinate is all you need.  You are seeing if the spores of both strains germinate at about the same time and mate.  Then throw the spore solution you tested on agar and keep it at the same temp you germinated the spores on your slide.  Watch it grow.  Take a wedge or some rizomorphic growth at the edge of a colony and grow it out and see what you get.

At this point it is smarter and easier to start with a good strand like PE or another strain you like and find a meaty and potent clone and store lots of plates.  Then make sure the clone is good and keep a few plates growing slowly in a fridge and grow out a lot of it.

My 2cents.  Contact me if you need guidance.  I'm not sure what you are trying to do.

The clamp connection is an interesting feature of mated myc.  They control the migration of the nuclei during cell division.

Here's a pic of my own...

Here's a little explanation...

How are so many psilocybin species produced in the first place? What makes new breeds of mushrooms? I've never thought of that. Gonna goooogle it:lol:

So if the theory is correct, can you cross a Psilocybe Cubensis with another Psilocybe.. Cyan or Asurescens for instance?

It would be better to cross species that were more closely related.  You can use genbank/BLAST to find out which species are closely related.

Traditionally, Psilocybe phylogenetics were inferred mostly from spore shape.  DNA sequencing has proven that this is not a good way to try to determine which ones are closely related.

I already knew the situation before questioning
No its more like can you cross and horse and a dog.
The answer is probably yes by some advanced DNA biologist. Its scary what they are doing these days.
