How did you "find" them? I would like some details because I also want to find them.
Do you have any pictures of a cross-section?

i did a little google research to narrow down general area. hint: wineries and tree farms. had read that they wont appear much with dougs less than 15 years. and just started driving. found appropriate age trees (and the hard part) on public parcels or at least weren't posted well. it was more of a scouting trip for me. i only checked 10 or so trees.
a couple of things.
all this is based only off my experience, it was my first time so i probably got lucky. raking sucks. physically and emotionally. i'm not an old guy but it's been a while since i felt 25 and bending over like that got old quick. i felt really dirty doing it. like i was doing something wrong. like i didn't want anyone to see me. i tried a couple different ways. i targeted random trees and raked all around the skirt not finding anything. where i found them (maybe coincidence) were under trees where rodents had made holes near the base. all were in the top 2 or 3 inches of duff or soil, couldn't really tell which. the white ones at least were really easy to spot. they looked like a marshmallow in coffee. at one point i raked up a salamander nest full of eggs
i'm not a hippie or an idealist but i would consider myself a lover of nature. and the whole thing just kind of felt wrong. not saying i'm done doing this but before i do it again i'm gonna read more about the impact of it. i've seen pics of a proven area that had been over raked. square acres of forest had been rototilled 12" deep. but i'm sure it's sustainable if not abused and done conscientiously.
i have not cut them open yet as i'm not ready to eat. i found some that were rotten though. the odor is strange and each one is a bit different. i'm also pretty sure that some of these are not ripe yet. some say that they will ripen in the fridge but that sounds like a crock to me. we'll see... i have one in a tupperware with half stick of butter and another in tupperware with 2 eggs.
if anyone is interested in taking me morel hunting this year i'll take you out to find some of these little guys once i do some more reading hopefully.

I think I will wait till I get a dog to go truffle hunting.
I could not sleep if I tore open a nest of salamander eggs.

It's a hardcore thing to rake I agree, sometimes poking around where the voles have dug around can be fruitful from what I hear, sometimes they don't retrieve what they are smelling. Another tip I heard is if you lay flat on the ground and look down the duff layer and you'll see gnats flying up and down on a particular area and that's where they will be. I've never had the patience to do so but I would consider it.

I taught my parent's dog how to hunt truffles, but when I took her out this year she forgot! I know that if I find one, she can smell it and find more (that part she remembers). I've had really bad luck finding one without her nose this year.
If someone has a fresh truffle and wants to find more hit me up. I just made friends with a contract logger who has 500 acres of 20 year old Douglas Firs that he will give me exclusive access to.

Yeah, yeah! Jump on dis train!
I have another secret local road to show you. There might be snow now, but last week I picked hedgehogs and winter chants there. It's clear cut city at lower elevations, but that's how I make connections with loggers.
Let me know when you could go, hopefully we can find a day that works for all of us. If not, I'd go twice.

split the most fragrant one open. the odor is not something i can describe easily. but it's not something i would blindly smell and say to myself - "self, you need to put this in your mouth"

I love how Eugenia Bone describes the smell in her New York Times article:
Quote:
It’s as if a sulfuric love bomb went off. If you could roll in the smell, you would.
There's an even better description in her new book, but I'd have to find it and I'm rather lazy.

Wouldn't there be a risk of poisoning from picking truffles in orchards that are constantly using pesticide, fungicides and herbicides?

I've read somewhere that Arsenic is present in some mycorrhizal fungus in apple orchards. It's more from apple seeds though, but if it can build up to dangerous levels in the soil overtime, I'm sure other things can as well.

It matters how old the orchard is, the older it is the worse the arsenic contamination will be. I think the wide spread use of the arsenic containing pesticides slowed down in the 60's, but sales were banned in 1972. People may have used it afterwards, but it is less likely after that. I have found some crazy old pesticides in barns and at old farms in the area before.
Here's a little fact sheet: http://ir.library.oregonstate.edu/xmlui/bitstream/handle/1957/19238/ec1513-e_.pdf
