Crazy. I have been finding a lot of bug free L. rubrilacteus this season.

About the H. lacunosa. A friend of mine dries them and grinds them to a powder
and uses them as a flavoring. I have not tasted them so I cannot attest to their
flavor.

Cool, I'm going to dry them then.  They seem like they're going to have a great texture, in a couple weeks I will probably soak to rehydrate, discard that water then parboil them again before using them, they seem like they'd be a great substitution for wood ear in a hot and sour soup, and there seem to be a fair amount of people that eat them in the PNW without problems.  At least if they're dry they'll wait for me to get the balls up to try them.

And yeah, I've found quite a few good rubrilacteus this year, they seem to grow in smaller numbers and get less bugs, the deliciosus get those big huge fruitings but you still only get a few decent ones out the patch.  I still feel like if I had been there a week ago the haul would have been twice as much and far better quality.  I've also noticed that l. deliciosus have a bit of a funky smell to them that the rubrilacteus don't, it disappears upon cooking, but it certainly isn't appetizing.

I wanted to confirm before I cook these. Boletus Zelleri don't have any look alikes right? It's my first time trying them. I've pretty much only have eaten chantrells and cauliflower mushrooms that I've found.

... and the cauliflower mushrooms! I just went back for the second one yesterday.

I eat zelleris and whatever else i find in the portland region that looks and behaves like them and have never gotten into trouble.
they have a grassy flavor and aren't really all that great fresh as compared to kings, but dried they're quite excellent.

Alright rad thanks! So cooking with them isn't all that good or by fresh do you mean eating them raw?

I've never seen a King Bolete   It's funny because many of the common ones I haven't been able to find but then I find other cool stuff.  I've never found a "lobster" either.

Sure am. I probably would have slept in the back of my truck anyway but
yeah, I could not coax anyone to go with me and I did not want to sit in the woods alone. Boring.

I still cannot believe the size of these matsutake though. 6" long 5" across.

Boom!
