these are some pics i took this morning in portland. i had a 90 minutes of free time so i spent it collecting dinner. the first one is the normal kind of shaggy parasols i find. they're all over the place in NW oregon right now, really delicious mushroom, i guess its the oliveri variety. the last pic is this other kind of shaggy parasol that i see once in a while and i'm guessing its brunneum. pic 3 you all know and i can't figure out what the paired boletes are. the caps were a little bit lumpy suede like a young, dry zeller's is, but i'm pretty sure its not a mirabalis because the flesh inside the stipe was white and i don't think mirabalis has that kind of netting

how do you cook your cauliflowers? i've found pounds and pounds of them this season, but i only have one recipe i like and i've made it too many times last time i saw a s. crispa i just walked shamefully past it. i felt really bad about passing up such a big, popular edible.

If they weren't such a pita to clean, I think they'd make a great noodle substitute - think something like a beef stroganoff.

Yesterday I went to the shitty new Snoqualmie Falls trail yesterday and saw a few cool mushrooms...
First time I've ever seen these orange, rubbery fungi.

"Bird's Nest"

These were BRIGHT white and growing inside the hollow of a fallen tree.

Weird cluster growing on a mossy log.

Then today I found 2 yards a couple blocks away that were loaded with muscaria! One yard had about 20-30 plus some boletes and other shit.
Picture perfect!

Hiding under a bush

2 houses down

This bolete was about 7-8" across. It's pretty darn big. Is it a King?

Depends. I just clean them, evaporate the excess liquid in a frying pan, then freeze them in 6-oz portions. If you have an awful lot of them, they can be treated like noodles after the evaporation, i.e. just serve with pasta sauce. Alternatively, purée and use as a base for a mushroom soup, or as a base for ravioli stuffing. Or cut into smallish pieces, make a roux with white wine, parsley and cream and serve on toast. The possibilities are endless.

The stipe on that bolete does not say edulis to moi.

Thanks for the bolete help guys!
xfsketch: Those birds nest are more common than you think. I never find them until I'm close to the ground looking at a LARGER mushroom. THEN I see them :P Each next/cup is about 1cm in diameter, so VERY small. You can see what looks like little eggs in there. Those are spore clumps and the only way to spread them is for a drop of water to hit the next just right, splashing the spores out. VERY weird...

Haha. Well I'm just now learning the boletes. I wish all these mushrooms grew year round so we could school ourselves constantly.

it's stout. my friend has it drying at his house as my dehydrator is full but if i had to guess i'd say 4-5 lbs? i didn't think it was a king at first. we keyed it out a few different ways and it all came back positive. wish i had a pic of the cap surface. it was a dark red and kinda wrinkly warty-ish. exactly like the ones in "all the rain promises.." on pp158
