Thanks dude. Today was just so beautiful. An amazing day to hunt. And the weather is supposed to be as beautiful all week long.
I don't want to have a job!

Today was uhhhhmayzing!
I went hunting with thedirty mac today out on Mt. Hood.
She and I friggin killed it!
I finally got some hedghogs and some winter chants. As well as chants, gomphus clavatus, C. rachodes, G. tsugae, L. rubrilacteus, an amazingly huge and bug free B. mirabilis. Really stoked about that one. And my first matsutake!
I think. They smell fucked up and look like matsutake.
Ill have it ID'd later.
I am so jazzed. But now I have a ton of work to do to can what I don't want to eat
The bounty

The C. rachodes came from a neighborhood in SE Portland I found while on my way to pick up thedirtymac.
Killer haul Ganzig! Nice to see you found some B. mirablis too. They seem to be out in force this year.
What do you do with your G. tsugae? I saw a nice one similar in size to yours and didn't think to harvest it. Any suggestions?

I have started making tinctures with them. I slice em thin and dry them.
Then I put them in my blender until they are pulverized. About 6-8 seconds.
Then I put them in grain alcohol or vodka. Working on my first one now. It is in 100 proof vodka.

Yeah, L. rubrilacteus.
I love them. You have to cook them well. All the way through. I describe the flavor as a nice grain or a fancy grain cracker.
I like to fry them in a high temp oil till the gills are crispy. Nom nom nom nom.
Both of my guide books say they are not deserving of the group name deliciousus but I cannot disagree more. When people are eating things like lobster mushrooms and saying those are delicious and there is this fantastic fancy grain flavored mushroom everywhere getting looked over.
Wait. Maybe that is good for me. More mushrooms!

Took a little bit of lobster, a few scanty chants and 4 small shaggies sauteed together and finished with a dash or two of tamari, had that with a burger on a Dave's bun. I'm stuffed. The lobster was okay like that, sliced quite thin.
I would have put in more lobster, but there weren't a lot of parts that looked totally solid to me on these specimens, perhaps they were a bit old - kind of translucent or different colored parts.
I should post up pics from today, but my belly's full and I'm suddenly v e r y s l e e p y .
Bleeding tooth fungus, a coupla brown amanitas, plenty of unknowns as well as the edibles above.
Haven't tried deep frying any shrooms but I'll have to with those little lactarius.

I only managed to hit up the one lot yesterday - meant to go across the street into the park and spend a few hours but I found enough to keep me busy with pics. I was a bit frustrated that the damned cam just would NOT focus on a few shrooms. Too much white and it just fritzed.
I've been waiting for the shaggies, and they're comin' on bigtime. Have to get out today and grab a bunch. This time around it's serious, I will harvest every one in my neighborhood and eat it. ;-) I challenge y'all to do the same. Shouldn't be difficult, they cook down so much.

Excellent pics, fry day I particularly like the slug portrait!
I went to a local park today looking for whatever I could find. At one point I had to take a piss so I ducked off into the woods. As I was taking care of my business I observed an odd colored rock about 20 feet away. After a shake & a flick I headed over to it and discovered much to my delight it was actually an enormous Boletus edulis. Two were way too old and bug ridden. But I got three good 4-5" caps, and a decent little patch just 1/2 mile from my house! Here's the one that caught my eye.

While poking around for some more porcini I stumbled onto this log with a very nice Hericium coralloides. This is the largest H. coralloides fruiting I have come across. I took the cluster on the left and the rest are there if I need more.

Talk about serendipity I ought to pee in the woods more often.

We ALL should pee in the woods more often. I hear it grounds yer innards. Hehe.
Beauty big bolete, too bad it was done, but at least you got some edibles...
These slugs... I don't recall having seen many of the spotty ones in the past, but they are everyfreakin'where I look now.

I leave the shittin' in the woods to bears, the pope and my mexican friends. I don't know what it is that makes these guys have to evacuate when they've been in the woods for 15 min or so. And I'm sure I don't want to know. Thanks for making me think of that.
