Dead conifers, eastside. There's no secret to it just lots of trial and error and zero-ing in on patches after awhile. It's kind of a solitary flushing type mushroom so I usually plan on picking hedgehogs or other things along the way until I find some. Same goes with the Cauliflower or Chicken of the Woods.. I usually find those while I'm out loading up on Chanterelles. Just keep your search images varied and comprehensive. Don't tunnel vision in on one thing like the Russians do with their Porcinis.
I came into a spot today that had signs of being picked over for Boletes, but the Pig's Ear Mushrooms growing all around there remained completely untouched.

Holy shit! I love those things. Where do you find those? What kind of tree is that grow from? It looks like a conifer. I need to know what you know. I would also like to find blue chanterelles, you my friend are a fucking wizard.
Wow, growing on conifer?!? This one is going on the bucket list for sure.
I see needles, flakey bark and shallow roots, is that tree a spruce? Is the tree completely dead?
Awesome cool find man. I've got research to do now

Today was excellent. pseudotsuga drove up from CA yesterday and today we seriously killed it. We found two active species, a zillion chants, and much much more.
The fungi gods shined down on us today.....
Today was the best. Why do you live so far away pseudotsuga? Bahhhhh!
Best day hunting this year. Hands down.
Russula brivepes Hydnellum aurantiacum Ramaria. stricta?

Looks like everyone's finding some great stuff! I was so disappointed to miss out on the "official" gathering a couple weekends ago. I was still able to go out about 20 miles from home with a friend who knew a good area for Chanterelles. We each came back with about 10 pounds each. We had to stop because our arms were tired after all the hiking/picking :P
Also... I got attacked by hornets. It was like straight out of a movie. At least 5 stings. Lots of running and flailing.
Anyway, here's some recent finds on Chanterelle hunts...
Hypholoma fascicular??

Amanita pantherina?

Bolete with crazy bright bruising

"Chicken Of The Woods"

My first fairy-ring!!

A nice specimen... (smile)

Some coral shit...

Stomping grounds...

NICE Finds FoxDie!!! That bruising bolete is wicked colored! I think the fairy ring is so awesome. I have yet to find one but in due time right. I like all the shots. I especially like the Hypholoma fascicular pic. Oh and the light through the trees is sick too!
